✧ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed one of the two evening prayers with us – either he said Zuhr or he said 'Asr. He said: My stronger assumption is that it was 'Asr. He prayed two rak'ahs with us then said the salutation and went to a piece of wood at the front of the mosque and placed his hands on it, one on top of the other. The swift among the people left, and they began to say: 'The prayer has been shortened.' Among the people were Abu Bakr and 'Umar ؓ, but they were too afraid to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about that. A man called Dhu al-Yadayn said to him: 'Has the prayer been shortened, O Messenger of Allah, or did you forget?' He said: 'The prayer has not been shortened, and I did not forget.' He said: 'Rather, you forgot, O Messenger of Allah.' He said: 'Is it so?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: So he returned and prayed two rak'ahs with us, then said the salutation, then prostrated two prostrations and prolonged them for about as long as his prostration, then raised his head, then made the second prostration and prolonged it for about as long as his prostration, then raised his head.
Notes

- Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr
