✧ We went to ʿAbd Allah b. Masʿūd one day after we had prayed the dawn prayer. We greeted at the door and he gave us permission, so we waited a little while. A servant came out and said: “Will you not enter?” So we entered and found him sitting and glorifying Allah. He said: “What prevented you from entering when permission had been given to you?” They said: “Nothing, except that we thought some of the household were asleep.” He said: “You thought the family of Umm ʿAbd were negligent?” Then he resumed glorifying Allah until he thought the sun had risen. He said: “O girl, look and see whether it has risen.” She looked and it had risen. He said: “Praise be to Allah who has granted us this day”—Mahdī said: I think he said—“and did not destroy us for our sins.” A man from the group said: “I recited all the mufaṣṣal last night.” ʿAbd Allah said: “Rapidly, like the recitation of poetry? I know the pairs which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to recite: eighteen surahs from the mufaṣṣal and two surahs from the family of Ḥā Mīm.”
