أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ حَدَّثَنَا عَمْرُو بْنُ زُرَارَةَ الْكِلَابِيُّ حَدَّثَنَا حَاتِمُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ مُجَاهِدٍ أَبُو حَزْرَةَ عَنْ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ قَالَ
أَتَيْنَا جَابِرَ بْنَ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فِي مَسْجِدِهِ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ مُشْتَمِلًا بِهِ فَتَخَطَّيْتُ الْقَوْمَ حَتَّى جَلَسْتُ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ الْقِبْلَةِ فَقُلْتُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ تُصَلِّي فِي ثَوْبٍ وَاحِدٍ وَهَذَا رِدَاؤُكَ إِلَى جَنْبِكَ؟! فَقَالَ بِيَدِهِ فِي صَدْرِي أَرَدْتُ أَنْ يَدْخُلَ عَلَيَّ أَحْمَقُ مِثْلُكَ فَيَرَانِي كَيْفَ أَصْنَعُ فَيَصْنَعُ بِمِثْلِهِ أَتَانَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِي مَسْجِدِنَا هَذَا وَفِي يَدِهِ عُرْجُونُ ابْنِ طَابٍ فَرَأَى نُخَامَةً فِي قِبْلَةِ الْمَسْجِدِ فَأَقْبَلَ عَلَيْهَا فَحَكَّهَا بِالْعُرْجُونِ ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ عَلَيْنَا فَقَالَ «أَيُّكُمْ يُحِبُّ أَنْ يُعْرِضَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ؟ » قَالَ فَخَشَعْنَا ثُمَّ قَالَ «أَيُّكُمْ يُحِبُّ أَنْ يُعْرِضَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ؟ » فَقُلْنَا لَا أَيُّنَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ «إِنَّ أَحَدَكُمْ إِذَا قَامَ يُصَلِّي فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ قِبَلَ وَجْهِهِ فَلَا يَبْصُقْ قِبَلَ وَجْهِهِ وَلَا عَنْ يَمِينِهِ وَلْيَبْصُقْ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ تَحْتَ رِجْلِهِ الْيُسْرَى فَإِنْ عَجِلَتْ بِهِ بَادِرَةٌ فَلْيَقُلْ بِثَوْبِهِ هَكَذَا وَرَدَّ بَعْضَهُ عَلَى بَعْضٍ أَرُونِي عَبِيرًا» فَقَامَ فَتًى مِنَ الْحَيِّ يَشْتَدُّ إِلَى أَهْلِهِ فَجَاءَ بِخَلُوقٍ فِي رَاحَتَيْهِ فَأَخَذَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ فَجَعَلَهُ عَلَى رَأْسِ الْعُرْجُونِ وَلَطَخَ بِهِ عَلَى أَثَرِ النُّخَامَةِ قَالَ جَابِرٌ «فَمِنْ هُنَاكَ جَعَلْتُمُ الْخَلُوقَ فِي مَسَاجِدِكُمْ»

✧ We came to Jabir b. Abd Allah in his mosque while he was praying in a single garment, wrapping himself with it. I stepped over the people until I sat between him and the qiblah. I said, “May Allah have mercy on you! You pray in a single garment while your cloak is beside you?!” He said, gesturing with his hand to my chest, “I wanted a fool like you to come in to me and see how I do it, so he would do the same. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to us in this mosque of ours with a stalk of Ibn Tab dates in his hand. He saw spittle in the qiblah of the mosque, so he went to it and scraped it with the stalk. Then he turned to us and said, ‘Which of you would like Allah to turn away from him?’” He said, “We were humbled. Then he said, ‘Which of you would like Allah to turn away from him?’ We said, ‘None of us, O Messenger of Allah.’ He said, ‘When one of you stands to pray, Allah is before his face, so let him not spit before his face nor to his right, but let him spit to his left under his left foot. If he is overtaken by haste, let him do thus with his garment,’ and he folded part of it over another. ‘Show me some perfume.’ A young man from the clan got up and hurried to his family, then came with khaluq in his two palms. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took it and put it on the tip of the stalk, then smeared it over the trace of the spittle.” Jabir said, “From that time you started putting khaluq in your mosques.”
