✧ There was fighting among Banu Amr b. Awf, so the Prophet ﷺ came to them to reconcile between them. He had already prayed Zuhr, so he said to Bilal, 'If the time for Asr prayer comes and I have not come, tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer.' When the time for Asr came, Bilal gave the adhan and the iqamah and said, 'O Abu Bakr, come forward.' Abu Bakr came forward. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and made his way through the rows. When the people saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, they clapped. Abu Bakr used not to turn around once he had entered the prayer. When he saw the clapping not stopping, he turned and saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ behind him. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ gestured to him, 'Continue.' Abu Bakr paused a little, praised Allah for the command of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, then Abu Bakr walked backwards on his heels. When the Prophet ﷺ saw that, he came forward and led the people in their prayer. When he finished the prayer, he said, 'O Abu Bakr, what prevented you from continuing when I gestured to you?' Abu Bakr said, 'It was not for the son of Abu Quhafah to lead the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in prayer.' Then he said to the people, 'If something befalls you during your prayer, let the men glorify and the women clap.'
