✧ We were with the Prophet ﷺ on a military expedition, and the people were afflicted with a severe famine. They asked the Messenger of Allah for permission to slaughter some of their riding camels. Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah, what would happen to us if we met our enemy hungry and on foot? But if you see fit, O Messenger of Allah, call upon the people to bring the remainder of their provisions." So they came with them, each man bringing a handful of food or more, and the one who brought the most brought a sa' of dates. He gathered it on a leather mat, then called upon Allah as Allah willed him to call. Then he invited the people to bring their vessels, and there remained not a vessel in the army except that it was filled, and there remained the like of it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ laughed until his molars showed, then he said: «I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness before Allah that no believing servant meets Him with these two but that they will veil him from the Fire on the Day of Resurrection.»
