✧ O Messenger of Allah, what do you think if I meet a man from the disbelievers and he fights me and strikes one of my hands with a sword and cuts it off, then he takes refuge from me behind a tree and says, "I have submitted to Allah"—should I kill him after he has said it? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not kill him." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, he has cut off my hand, and he said that after cutting it off—should I kill him?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Do not kill him, for if you kill him, he would be in the position you were in before you killed him, and you would be in the position he was in before he uttered the word he said."

machine translationAl-Zuhrī narrates it, and there is disagreement about him. Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān, Isḥāq b. Rāshid, the nephew of al-Zuhrī, Ibn Jurayj, al-Layth b. Saʿd, al-Nuʿmān b. Rāshid, ʿUqayl b. Khālid, ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Jaʿfar, Usāmah b. Zayd and ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Isḥāq narrated it from al-Zuhrī, from ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī b. al-Khiyār, from al-Miqdād b. al-Aswad. Al-Awzāʿī narrated it from Ibrāhīm b. Murrah, from al-Zuhrī, and there is disagreement about him as well. Abū Isḥāq al-Fazārī, Muḥammad b. Shuʿayb, Muḥammad b. Ḥimyar and al-Walīd b. Mazyad narrated it from al-Awzāʿī, from Ibrāhīm b. Murrah, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī b. al-Khiyār, from al-Miqdād; they did not mention ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd in it. There is disagreement about al-Walīd b. Muslim: Abū al-Walīd al-Qurashī narrated it from al-Walīd, from al-Awzāʿī and al-Layth b. Saʿd, from al-Zuhrī, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī, from al-Miqdād; he did not mention ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd and omitted Ibrāhīm b. Murrah. ʿĪsā b. Musāwir contradicted him and narrated it from al-Walīd, from al-Awzāʿī, from al-Zuhrī, from Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, from ʿUbaydullāh b. ʿAdī, from al-Miqdād; he did not mention Ibrāhīm b. Murrah in it, and put Ḥumayd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān in the place of ʿAṭāʾ b. Yazīd. Al-Firyābī narrated it from al-Awzāʿī, from Ibrāhīm b. Murrah, from al-Zuhrī, as a mursal report from al-Miqdād. The correct one is the version of Ṣāliḥ b. Kaysān and those who followed him.
