✧ That ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz was sitting on the pulpit and delayed the prayer somewhat. So ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr said: “Indeed Jibrīl informed Muḥammad ﷺ of the time of prayer.” ʿUmar said to him: “Know what you are saying.” ʿUrwah said: “I heard Bashīr b. Abī Masʿūd say: I heard Abū Masʿūd al-Anṣārī say: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: ‘Jibrīl descended and informed me of the time of prayer, so I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him, then I prayed with him’—and he counted with his fingers five prayers—‘and I saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ pray ẓuhr when the sun declines, and sometimes he delayed it when the heat became intense. And I saw him pray ʿaṣr while the sun was high and white before yellowness entered it, so that a man would leave after the prayer and reach Dhū al-Ḥulayfah before sunset. And he prayed maghrib when the sun set, and he prayed ʿishāʾ when the horizon became dark, and sometimes he delayed it until people gathered. And he prayed ṣubḥ once in darkness, and he prayed another time and let it brighten. Then his prayer after that was in darkness until he died ﷺ, not returning to letting it brighten.’”

  • al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī

  • Ibn Khuzaymah
