✧ It was said to ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb, 'Tell us about the affair of the hardship.' He said, 'We went out to Tabūk in intense heat. We stopped at a place where we were struck by such thirst that we thought our necks would snap. A man would go looking for water and not return until we thought his neck would snap. A man would even slaughter his camel, squeeze its undigested stomach contents and drink it, and put what remained on his liver. Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq said, "O Messenger of Allah, Allah has accustomed you to good in supplication, so supplicate for us." He said, "Would you like that?" He said, "Yes." He said, so he raised his hands ﷺ and did not lower them until a cloud overshadowed us and poured down. They filled what they had with them, then we went to look and did not find it beyond the army.'

machine translationʿAmr b. al-Ḥārith narrated it from Saʿīd b. Abī Hilāl, from ʿUtbah b. Abī ʿUtbah, from Nāfiʿ b. Jubayr b. Muṭʿim, from Ibn ʿAbbās. Ibn Wahb related it from him, and there is disagreement about it from him. Aḥmad b. Ṣāliḥ and Yūnus b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā narrated it from Ibn Wahb with this chain. Yaʿqūb b. Muḥammad al-Zuhrī differed from them: he narrated it from Ibn Wahb and did not mention ʿUtbah in the chain, making it from Saʿīd b. Abī Hilāl, from Nāfiʿ b. Jubayr. The correct view concerning it is the view of those who mentioned ʿUtbah b. Abī ʿUtbah.
