✧ The admonition to prevent reliance on the writings of a person without preserving them

أَخْبَرَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الْهَمْدَانِيُّ قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَارِثِ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ أَبِي قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنٌ الْمُعَلِّمُ أَنَّ يَحْيَى بْنَ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ حَدَّثَهُ عَنْ أَبِي سَلَمَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ خَالِدٍ الْجُهَنِيِّ أَنَّهُ

سَأَلَ عُثْمَانَ بْنَ عَفَّانَ عَنِ الرَّجُلِ إِذَا جَامَعَ وَلَمْ يُنْزِلْ؟ فَقَالَ لَيْسَ عَلَيْهِ شَيْءٌ ثُمَّ قَالَ عُثْمَانُ «سَمِعْتُهُ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ قَالَ فَسَأَلْتُ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ وَالزُّبَيْرَ بْنَ الْعَوَّامِ وَطَلْحَةَ بْنَ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ وَأُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ فَقَالُوا مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ

✧ He asked ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān about a man who has sexual intercourse but does not ejaculate. He said: “Nothing is due from him.” Then ʿUthmān said: “I heard it from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.” He said: “After that I asked ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, al-Zubayr b. al-ʿAwwām, Ṭalḥa b. ʿUbayd Allāh, and Ubayy b. Kaʿb, and they said the same.”
