✧ The admonition to prevent reliance on the writings of a person without preserving them

أَخْبَرَنَا الْحَسَنُ بْنُ سُفْيَانَ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَسَّانُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ مَسْرُوقٍ عَنْ يَزِيدَ بْنِ حَيَّانَ عَنْ زَيْدِ بْنِ أَرْقَمَ قَالَ

دَخَلْنَا عَلَيْهِ فَقُلْنَا لَهُ لَقَدْ رَأَيْتَ خَيْرًا صَحِبْتَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَصَلَّيْتَ خَلْفَهُ فَقَالَ نَعَمْ وَإِنَّهُ ﷺ خَطَبَنَا فَقَالَ «إِنِّي تَارِكٌ فِيكُمْ كِتَابَ اللَّهِ هُوَ حَبْلُ اللَّهِ مَنِ اتَّبَعَهُ كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَى وَمَنْ تَرَكَهُ كَانَ عَلَى الضَّلَالَةِ»

✧ We entered upon him and said to him, "You have indeed witnessed good, accompanied the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and prayed behind him." He replied, "Yes, indeed he ﷺ delivered a sermon to us and said, 'I am leaving among you the Qur'an, it is the rope of Allah, whoever holds onto it will be upon guidance, and whoever abandons it will be upon misguidance.'"
