✧ I said to ʿAṭāʾ, “Which time do you prefer for me to pray the night prayer (al-ʿatamah), whether as an imam or alone?” He said, “I heard Ibn ʿAbbās say: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ delayed the night prayer until the people slept and woke, then slept and woke. Then ʿUmar ؓ said, ‘The prayer, the prayer.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out, and it is as if I am looking at him now, water dripping from his head, placing his hands on his head, and said, ‘Were it not that I would make it difficult for my community, I would have commanded them to pray like this.’”
