✧ We went out with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa'. A man among the Muslims had struck the wife of a man among the polytheists. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned, her husband came, having been absent. When he was informed, he swore not to stop until he had shed blood among the companions of Muhammad ﷺ. He went out following the trail of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ encamped and said, 'Who is a man to guard us this night of ours?' A man from the Muhajirun and a man from the Ansar volunteered, saying, 'We are, O Messenger of Allah.' He ﷺ said, 'Then be at the mouth of the mountain pass.' He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions had descended into a mountain pass of the valley. When the two men went out to the mouth of the pass, the Ansari said to the Muhajiri, 'Which part of the night would you like me to relieve you in, its beginning or its end?' He said, 'Relieve me in its beginning.' He said: So the Muhajiri lay down and slept, and the Ansari stood up to pray. The husband of the woman came, and when he saw the figure of the man, he knew that he was the watchman of the people, so he shot an arrow at him and lodged it in him. He pulled it out and remained standing in prayer. Then he shot another arrow and lodged it in him. He pulled it out and remained standing in prayer. Then he came back for the third time and lodged it in him. He pulled it out and put it down, then bowed and prostrated, then roused his companion and said, 'Sit up, for I have been struck.' He sprang up. When the man saw the two of them, he knew that he had been noticed and fled. When the Muhajiri saw the blood on the Ansari, he said, 'Glory be to Allah! Why did you not rouse me when he first shot you?' He said, 'I was in the middle of a surah that I was reciting and did not like to cut it off until I had completed it. When he continued shooting at me, I bowed and alerted you. By Allah, had I not feared neglecting a frontier that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ commanded me to guard, my soul would have departed before I cut it off or completed it.'
