حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ فُضَيْلٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي غَيْرُ وَاحِدٍ:
أَنَّ قَاضِيًا مِنْ قُضَاةِ الشَّامِ أَتَى عُمَرَ فَقَالَ: يَا أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ، رُؤْيَا [١]أَفْظَعَتْنِي !، قَالَ: مَا هِيَ ؟ قَالَ: رَأَيْتُ الشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ يَقْتَتِلَانِ، وَالنُّجُومَ مَعَهُمَا نِصْفَيْنِ، قَالَ: فَمَعَ أَيِّهِمَا [٢]كُنْتَ ؟ قَالَ: كُنْتُ مَعَ الْقَمَرِ عَلَى الشَّمْسِ، فَقَالَ عُمَرُ ﴿وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ آيَتَيْنِ فَمَحَوْنَا آيَةَ اللَّيْلِ وَجَعَلْنَا آيَةَ النَّهَارِ مُبْصِرَةً ﴾فَانْطَلِقْ، فَوَاللهِ لَا تَعْمَلُ لِي عَمَلًا أَبَدًا، قَالَ عَطَاءٌ: فَبَلَغَنِي أَنَّهُ قُتِلَ مَعَ مُعَاوِيَةَ يَوْمَ صِفِّينَ

A judge from among the judges of al-Shām came to ʿUmar and said: "O Commander of the Believers, a dream has terrified me!" He said: "What is it?" He said: "I saw the sun and the moon fighting each other, and the stars with them divided into two halves." He said: "With which of them were you?" He said: "I was with the moon against the sun." So ʿUmar recited: ﴿وَجَعَلْنَا اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ آيَتَيْنِ فَمَحَوْنَا آيَةَ اللَّيْلِ وَجَعَلْنَا آيَةَ النَّهَارِ مُبْصِرَةً﴾ "Go away! By Allah, you will never work for me in any post." ʿAṭāʾ said: "It reached me that he was killed fighting alongside Muʿāwiyah on the day of Ṣiffīn."
