When al-Zubayr stood on the day of the Camel, he called me and I stood by his side. He said: "No one is killed except a wrongdoer or one who is wronged, and I [think that I will surely be killed] today as one who is wronged. The greatest of my worries is my debt. Do you think our debt will leave anything of our wealth?" Then he said: "My son, sell our property and settle our debt. I bequeath to you a third - and its two thirds are for his sons - so if anything remains of our wealth after the debt is settled, a third of it is for your children." ʿAbdullāh b. al-Zubayr said: He kept instructing me about his debt and saying: "My son, if you are unable to pay any part of it, seek help in it from my Master." He said: By God, I did not understand what he meant until I said: "Father, who is your Master?" He said: "God." He said: By God, I never fell into difficulty over his debt but that I said: "O Master of al-Zubayr, settle his debt for him," and He would settle it. He said: Al-Zubayr was killed and he left neither a dinar nor a dirham, except for lands, among them al-Ghābah, eleven houses in Medina, two houses in Basra, a house in Kufa, and a house in Egypt. He said: The debt he had was only that a man would come to him with money and deposit it with him, and al-Zubayr would say: "No, rather it is a loan; I fear its loss." He never held any office, nor collected taxes, nor land tax, nor anything, except when on a military expedition with [the Prophet] ﷺ, or with Abū Bakr, ʿUmar and ʿUthmān.
