حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ قَالَ: حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو شِهَابٍ، عَنِ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو الْفُقَيْمِيِّ، عَنْ مُنْذِرٍ الثَّوْرِيِّ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ حُذَيْفَةَ قَالَ:
لَمَّا [تَحَسَّرَ] [١]النَّاسُ سَعِيدَ بْنَ الْعَاصِ كَتَبُوا بَيْنَهُمْ كِتَابًا أَنْ لَا يُسْتَعْمَلَ عَلَيْهِمْ إِلَّا رَجُلًا يَرْضَوْنَهُ لِأَنْفُسِهِمْ وَدِينِهِمْ، فَبَيْنَمَا هُمْ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ قَدِمَ حُذَيْفَةُ مِنَ الْمَدَائِنِ، فَأَتَوْهُ بِكِتَابِهِمْ فَقَالُوا: يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ ! صَنَعْنَا بِهَذَا الرَّجُلِ مَا قَدْ بَلَغَكَ، ثُمَّ كَتَبْنَا هَذَا الْكِتَابَ وَأَحْبَبْنَا [وَأَنْ] [٢]لَا نَقْطَعَ أَمْرًا دُونَكَ !. فَنَظَرَ فِي كِتَابِهِمْ وَضَحِكَ وَقَالَ: وَاللهِ مَا أَدْرِي أَيَّ الْأَمْرَيْنِ أَرَدْتُمْ ؟ أَرَدْتُمْ أَنْ تَتَوَلَّوْا سُلْطَانَ قَوْمٍ لَيْسَ لَكُمْ ؟ [أَوْ] [٣]: أَرَدْتُمْ أَنَّ تَرُدُّوا هَذِهِ الْفِتْنَةَ حَيْثُ أَطْلَعَتْ خِطَامَهَا وَاسْتَوَتْ ؟ إِنَّهَا لَمُرْسَلَةٌ مِنَ اللهِ فِي الْأَرْضِ تَرْتَعُ [٤]حَتَّى تَطَأَ عَلَى خِطَامِهَا، لَنْ يَسْتَطِيعَ أَحَدٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ لَهَا رَدًّا، وَلَيْسَ أَحَدٌ مِنَ النَّاسِ يُقَاتِلُ فِيهَا إِلَّا قُتِلَ، حَتَّى يَبْعَثَ اللهُ قَزَعًا كَقَزَعِ الْخَرِيفِ يَكُونُ بِهِمْ بَيْنَهُمْ.

When the people [unclear: grew weary of] Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ, they wrote a document among themselves that no one should be appointed over them except a man whom they approved for themselves and for their religion. While they were in that state, Ḥudhayfah arrived from al-Madāʾin, so they brought him their document and said: "O Abū ʿAbdillāh! We did to this man what has reached you, then we wrote this document, and we wished that we not decide any matter without you!" He looked at their document and laughed, and said: "By Allah, I do not know which of the two things you intended. Did you intend to take charge of the authority of a people that is not yours? Or did you intend to turn back this tribulation (fitnah) after it has shown its reins and settled firm? It has been sent forth by Allah upon the earth, grazing, until it treads upon its reins. No one among the people will be able to turn it back, and no one among the people will fight in it except that he will be killed, until Allah sends scattered clouds like the scattered clouds of autumn, who will be among them."
