machine translationIbn Idrīs narrated to us, from Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, from ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah, from Maḥmūd b. Labīd, from Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, who said:

Machine translation, not reviewed

When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided the captives at al-Jiʿrānah, he gave gifts to Quraysh and other Arabs, and the Anṣār received nothing of it. So the talk increased and spread, until one of them said: "As for the Messenger of Allah, he has met his own people." He said: So he sent for Saʿd b. ʿUbādah and said: "What is this talk that has reached me from your people, about which they have said so much?" Saʿd said to him: "What reached you has indeed been said." He said: "Then where do you stand in that?" He said: "I am only a man from my people." He said: His anger grew intense, and he said: "Gather your people, and let no one else be with them." He said: So he gathered them in one of the enclosures for the captives and stood at its door, and he let in only those who were of his people. He left some men of the Muhājirūn aside and turned others away. He said: Then the Prophet ﷺ came, anger being visible on his face, and said: "O assembly of the Anṣār, did I not find you astray, and Allah guided you?" They began to say: "We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah [and from the anger of] His Messenger." "O assembly of the Anṣār, did I not find you poor, and Allah enriched you?" They began to say: "We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and the anger of His Messenger." "O assembly of the Anṣār, did I not find you enemies, and Allah united your hearts?" They said: "We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and the anger of His Messenger." Then he said: "Will you not answer?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger are more generous and more excellent." When the anger had lifted from him, he said: "Had you wished, you could have said, and you would have been truthful and been believed: Did we not find you driven out, and we sheltered you; and denied, and we believed you; and poor, and we comforted you; and forsaken, and we helped you?" They began to weep and say: "Allah and His Messenger are more generous and more excellent." "Did you feel something over a bit of this world that I gave to some people to win their hearts to Islam, while I entrusted you to your Islam? If the people took one valley or mountain path, and you took another valley or mountain path, I would take your valley or your mountain path. You are the inner garment and the people are the outer garment. Were it not for the Hijrah, I would be a man of the Anṣār." Then he raised his hands until I could see what was beneath his armpits, and said: "O Allah, forgive the Anṣār, and the sons of the Anṣār, and the sons of the sons of the Anṣār. Are you not satisfied that the people go away with sheep and camels, while you go back to your homes with the Messenger of Allah?" The people wept until their beards were wet, and they went away saying: "We are pleased with Allah as Lord, and with His Messenger as our share and portion."
