When we came to Madinah and ate some of its fruits, we found the climate unsuitable and were struck by fever. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to seek news about Badr. He said: When it reached us that the polytheists had advanced, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for Badr - and Badr is a well - and we reached it before the polytheists. We found two men of theirs there: a man from Quraysh and a freedman of ʿUqbah b. Abī Muʿayṭ. As for the Qurashī, he escaped [to it] [1], and as for the freedman, we seized him. We kept asking him: How many are the people? He would say: By Allah, they are many in number and fierce in might. Whenever he said that, the Muslims would strike him, until they brought him to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said to him: How many are the people? He said [2]: By Allah, they are many in number and fierce in might. The people tried hard to make him tell them how many they were, but he refused. [2] [3]- Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him: How many do they slaughter? He said: Ten each day. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The people number a thousand, each camel being for a hundred, and those who follow them. [3] [4]- Then a light drizzle of rain came upon us during the night, so we went beneath the trees and the shields to shelter beneath them from the rain. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spent that night calling upon his Lord. When dawn broke, he called out: Prayer, servants of Allah! The people came from beneath the trees and the shields, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer and urged us on to fight. Then he said: The gathering of Quraysh is by this red rib of the mountain. [4] [5]- When the people drew near to us and we lined up against them, there was a man among them on a red camel moving among the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: O ʿAlī, call Ḥamzah for me - and he was the closest of them to the polytheists -: Who is the owner of the red camel, and what is he saying to them? Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to them: If there is anyone good among the people, it may be the owner of the red camel. Ḥamzah came and said: He is ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah, and he is forbidding fighting, saying to them: O my people, I see a people determined to die; you will not reach them, and there is good in you. O my people, tie the blame on my head and say: ʿUtbah was cowardly, though you know that I am not the most cowardly of you. - Abū Jahl heard that and said: You say this?! Had anyone else said this, I would have bitten him! Your lungs and your belly have been filled with terror! ʿUtbah said: Do you reproach me, you who yellow his backside? Today you will know which of us is more cowardly. [6] [6]- He said: Then ʿUtbah, his brother Shaybah and his son al-Walīd came forward out of zeal, and said: Who will duel [7]? Six young men of the Anṣār came out. ʿUtbah said: We do not want these, but let those of our cousins duel us, from the Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Rise, O ʿAlī; rise, O Ḥamzah; rise, O ʿUbaydah b. al-Ḥārith. Allah killed ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah, Shaybah b. Rabīʿah and al-Walīd b. ʿUtbah, and ʿUbaydah b. al-Ḥārith was wounded. We killed seventy of them and captured seventy. [7] [8]- He said: A short man of the Anṣār came with al-ʿAbbās as a captive. Al-ʿAbbās said: By Allah, this man did not capture me. I was captured by a bald man, one of the most handsome of people in face, on a piebald horse, whom I do not see among the people! The Anṣārī said: I captured him, O Messenger of Allah. He said to him: Be quiet. Allah has supported you with a noble angel. ʿAlī said: Captured from the Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib were al-ʿAbbās, ʿAqīl and Nawfal b. al-Ḥārith.
