The first to make Islam public were seven: the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, Abū Bakr, Bilāl, Khabbāb, Ṣuhayb, ʿAmmār, and Sumayyah, the mother of ʿAmmār. As for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, his uncle protected him; and as for Abū Bakr, his people protected him. The others were seized and made to wear coats of iron armour, then they were scorched in the sun until the hardship reached them to the utmost limit, so they gave them what they asked. Then the people of each man among them came to him with leather mats containing water, and they threw them into it, then they were carried by its sides, except Bilāl. When it was evening, Abū Jahl came and began to curse Sumayyah and speak obscenely; then he stabbed her and killed her, so she was the first martyr to be martyred in Islam. As for Bilāl, his own soul became insignificant to him for the sake of Allah until they grew tired of him. So they put a rope around his neck, then ordered their boys, who dragged him hurriedly between the two mountains of Mecca, while he kept saying: "One, One!"
