When Abū Ṭālib fell ill, a group of Quraysh entered upon him, among them Abū Jahl. They said: "Your nephew insults our gods, and does this and does that, and says this and says that. If only you would send for him and forbid him." So he sent for him – or he said: the Prophet ﷺ came – and he entered the house, and between him and Abū Ṭālib there was room for one man to sit. Abū Jahl feared that if the Prophet ﷺ sat beside Abū Ṭālib, he would be softer toward him, so he jumped up and sat in that place, and the Prophet ﷺ found no place near his uncle, so he sat by the door. Abū Ṭālib said: "O son of my brother, what is the matter with your people? They complain about you. They claim that you insult their gods and say this and say that and do this and do that." They said much against him of [harsh] talk. Then the Prophet ﷺ spoke and said: "O uncle, I want from them one word that they will say, by which the Arabs will submit to them, and by which the non-Arabs will pay them the jizyah." They were alarmed at his word and his saying. The people said: "One word? Yes, by your father! And ten. What is it?" Abū Ṭālib said: "And which word is it, O son of my brother?" He said: "There is no god but God." So they stood up alarmed, shaking out their garments, saying: ﴿أَجَعَلَ الآلِهَةَ إِلَهًا وَاحِدًا إِنَّ هَذَا لَشَيْءٌ عُجَابٌ﴾ He said: and he recited from this place up to His saying: ﴿لَمَّا يَذُوقُوا عَذَابِ﴾
