When ʿUmar rose during the night, he would say: "You see my standing and You know my need, so return me from Your presence, O Allah, with my need fulfilled [1], successful, with my supplication answered, and answered for me. You have forgiven me and have had mercy on me." When he finished his prayer, he would say: "O Allah, I do not see anything of this world that lasts, nor do I see any state in it that remains upright. [O Allah] [2] make me speak in it with knowledge, and keep silent in it with wisdom. O Allah, do not give me much of the world so that I transgress, and do not give me little of it so that I forget, for what is little and sufficient is better than what is much and distracting."
