حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو مُعَاوِيَةَ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ، عَنْ أَشْيَاخِهِ قَالَ:
دَخَلَ سَعْدُ بْنُ أَبِي وَقَّاصٍ عَلَى سَلْمَانَ يَعُودُهُ فَبَكَى، قَالَ: فَقَالَ لَهُ سَعْدٌ: مَا يُبْكِيكَ أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ ؟ تُوُفِّيَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ عَنْكَ رَاضٍ، وَتَلْقَاهُ وَتَرِدُ عَلَيْهِ الْحَوْضَ، فَقَالَ سَلْمَانُ: أَمَا إِنِّي لَا أَبْكِي جَزَعًا مِنَ الْمَوْتِ، وَلَا حِرْصًا عَلَى الدُّنْيَا، وَلَكِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ ﷺ عَهِدَ إِلَيْنَا فَقَالَ: لِيَكُنْ بُلْغَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ مِثْلَ زَادِ الرَّاكِبِ، قَالَ: وَحَوْلِي هَذِهِ الْأَسَاوِدُ ؟ قَالَ: وَإِنَّمَا حَوْلَهُ وِسَادَةٌ وَجَفْنَةٌ وَمِطْهَرَةٌ فَقَالَ سَعْدٌ: نص إضافييَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللهِ ! اعْهَدْ إِلَيْنَا عَهْدًا نَأْخُذُ بِهِ مِنْ بَعْدِكَ، فَقَالَ: يَا سَعْدُ ! اذْكُرِ اللهَ عِنْدَ هَمِّكَ إِذَا هَمَمْتَ، وَعِنْدَ حُكْمِكَ إِذَا حَكَمْتَ، وَعِنْدَ يَدِكَ إِذَا قَسَمْتَ.

Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ entered upon Salmān to visit him while he was ill, and he wept. Saʿd said to him: "What makes you weep, Abū ʿAbdillāh? The Messenger of Allah ﷺ died while he was pleased with you, and you will meet him and come to him at the Basin." Salmān said: "I do not weep out of fear of death, nor out of eagerness for this world. But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ made a covenant with us and said: 'Let the provision of each of you be like the provisions of a traveller.' And around me are these [many] things?" He said: Around him there was only a cushion, a bowl, and a washing vessel. Saʿd said: "O Abū ʿAbdillāh! Make a covenant with us that we may hold to after you." He said: "O Saʿd! Remember Allah when you are concerned, when you set your mind on something; and when you judge, when you pass judgement; and at your hand, when you distribute."
