I know the last of the people of Paradise to enter Paradise: a man who used to ask God to keep him away from the Fire. Then, when the people of Paradise entered Paradise and the people of the Fire entered the Fire, he was between the two. He said: "My Lord, bring me near to the gate of Paradise." It was said: "Son of Adam, did you not ask to be kept away from the Fire?" He said: "My Lord, and who is like You? Bring me near to the gate of Paradise." It was said: "Son of Adam, did you not ask to be kept away from the Fire?" He said: "And who is like You? Bring me near to the gate of Paradise." Then he looked at a tree by the gate of Paradise and said: "Bring me near to it so that I may take shade in its shade and eat of its fruit." He said: "Son of Adam, did you not say it?" He said: "My Lord, and who is like You? Bring me near to it." Then he saw something better than that and said: "My Lord, bring me near to it." He said: "Son of Adam, did you not say it?" until he said: "My Lord, and who is like You? Bring me near." Then it was said: "Run" — Abū Bakr said: al-ʿadw means running hard — "and you shall have whatever your feet reach and your eyes see." He said: So he runs until, when he is exhausted (ballaḥa, meaning he is worn out), he says: "My Lord, is this for me and this for me?" It is said: "You shall have the like of it and multiples of it." He says: "My Lord is pleased with me. If I were permitted to clothe and feed the people of the world, I would have enough for them all."
