Chain of narrators

machine translationAbū Muʿāwiyah narrated to us, he said: al-Aʿmash narrated to us, from al-Minhāl, from Saʿīd b. Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās, he said:

Machine translation, not reviewed

Six hundred thousand chairs would be set out for Sulaymān b. Dāwūd, peace be upon him. Then the nobles of mankind would come and sit on the right side, then the nobles of the jinn would come and sit on the left side. Then he would call the birds and they would shade them, then he would call the wind and it would carry them, and in a single morning he would travel the distance of a month. One day, while he was travelling through a barren stretch of land, he needed water. So he called the hoopoe, and it came and pecked the ground and found the place of the water. Then the devils would come to that water and strip it as a hide is stripped, and extract the water from it. He said: Nāfiʿ b. al-Azraq said to him: Stop, O you who keep stopping! Tell me about your saying "The hoopoe comes and pecks the ground and finds the place of the water": how does it see this, yet does not see the trap that is brought to it until it falls around its neck? Ibn ʿAbbās said to him: Woe to you! Indeed, destiny stands between a creature and its sight.”
