حَدَّثَنَا خَلَفُ بْنُ خَلِيفَةَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنِي أَبِي
أَنَّ الْحَجَّاجَ حِينَ قَتَلَ ابْنَ الزُّبَيْرِ جَاءَ بِهِ إِلَى مِنًى فَصَلَبَهُ عِنْدَ الثَّنِيَّةِ فِي بَطْنِ الْوَادِي، ثُمَّ قَالَ لِلنَّاسِ: انْظُرُوا إِلَى هَذَا ! [هَذَا ] [١]شَرُّ الْأُمَّةِ، فَقَالَ: إِنِّي رَأَيْتُ ابْنَ عُمَرَ جَاءَ عَلَى بَغْلَةٍ لَهُ فَذَهَبَ لِيُدْنِيَهَا مِنَ الْجِذْعِ فَجَعَلَتْ تَنْفِرُ، فَقَالَ لِمَوْلَاهُ: وَيْحَكَ خُذْ بِلِجَامِهَا فَأَدْنِهَا، قَالَ: فَرَأَيْتُهُ أَدْنَاهَا فَوَقَفَ عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ وَهُوَ يَقُولُ: رَحِمَكَ اللهُ، إِنْ كُنْتَ لَصَوَّامًا قَوَّامًا، وَلَقَدْ أَفْلَحَتْ أُمَّةٌ أَنْتَ شَرُّهَا

[This one] is the worst of the Ummah." He said: I saw Ibn ʿUmar come on a mule of his, and he went to bring it close to the trunk, but it kept shying away. So he said to his freedman: "Woe to you, take hold of its bridle and bring it close." He said: So I saw that he brought it close, and ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar stood, saying: "May Allah have mercy on you. You used to fast much and pray much at night, and a nation of which you are the worst has surely succeeded."
