machine translationIbn ʿUlayyah narrated to us, from Ayyūb, from Nāfiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar, who said:

Machine translation, not reviewed

When the pledge of allegiance was given to ʿAlī, he came to me and said: "You are a man beloved among the people of the Levant, and I have appointed you over them, so march to them." He said: So I mentioned the kinship and I mentioned the in-law relationship, and I said: "To proceed: by God, I will not pledge allegiance to you." He said: So he left me and went out. Then after that Ibn ʿUmar came to Umm Kulthūm, greeted her with salaam, and headed toward Mecca. Then ʿAlī, may God have mercy on him, was approached and told: "Ibn ʿUmar has headed toward the Levant, so call the people to mobilize." He said: The man was in such haste that he threw his cloak over the neck of his camel. He said: And Umm Kulthūm was approached and informed, so she sent word to her father: "What is this that you are doing? The man came to me, greeted me with salaam, and headed toward Mecca." So the people turned back.
