حَدَّثَنَا مَالِكُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ قَالَ: أَخْبَرَنَا جَعْفَرُ بْنُ زِيَادٍ، عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ، قَالَ:
كُنْتُ جَالِسًا مَعَ أَبِي الْبَخْتَرِيِّ الطَّائِيِّ وَالْحَجَّاجُ يَخْطُبُ، فَقَالَ: مَثَلُ عُثْمَانَ عِنْدَ اللهِ كَمَثَلِ عِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ؛ قَالَ: فَرَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ ثُمَّ تَأَوَّهَ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: ﴿إِنِّي مُتَوَفِّيكَ وَرَافِعُكَ إِلَيَّ ﴾إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: ﴿وَجَاعِلُ الَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوكَ فَوْقَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ﴾[١]قَالَ: فَقَالَ أَبُو الْبَخْتَرِيِّ: كَفَرَ وَرَبِّ الْكَعْبَةِ

I was sitting with Abū al-Bakhtarī al-Ṭāʾī while al-Ḥajjāj was delivering a sermon, and he said: "The likeness of ʿUthmān with Allah is like the likeness of ʿĪsā son of Maryam." He said: So he raised his head, then sighed, then said: ﴿إِنِّي مُتَوَفِّيكَ وَرَافِعُكَ إِلَيَّ ﴾ up to His saying: ﴿وَجَاعِلُ الَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوكَ فَوْقَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ ﴾[1] He said: Then Abū al-Bakhtarī said: "By the Lord of the Kaʿbah, he has disbelieved."
