Chain of narrators

machine translationIbn Fuḍayl narrated to us, from ʿAṭāʾ b. al-Sāʾib, from Muḥārib b. Dithār, from Ibn Buraydah, who said:

Machine translation, not reviewed

We arrived in Medina [1] and went to ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar, and we said: "O Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, we travel far into the land and meet people who claim that there is no divine decree (qadar)." He said: "Are they from the Muslims? From those who pray toward the qiblah [2]?" We said: "Yes [3]." He said: And he became angry, so that I wished I had not asked him. Then he said: "If you meet those people, tell them that ʿAbdullāh b. ʿUmar is free of them, and that they are free of him." Then he said: "If you wish, I will narrate to you from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." So I said [4]: "Yes." He said: We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when a man came to him, with fine clothes, a pleasant scent, and a handsome face. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "You establish the prayer, give the zakāh, fast Ramaḍān, perform the pilgrimage to the House, and perform the ritual bath after sexual impurity." He said: "You have spoken truly. Then what is faith (īmān)?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "You believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, the prophets, and in the divine decree entirely, its good and its evil, its sweet and its bitter." He said: "You have spoken truly." Then he left. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Bring the man to me." He said: So we all stood up, but we could not find him. Then the Prophet ﷺ said: "This was Jibrīl. He came to you to teach you the matter of your religion."
