The Detachment of ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh ᴿᴬ (the Detachment of Nakhla)
[ طَمَعُ ابْنِ جَحْشٍ فِي الْأَجْرِ وَمَا نَزَلَ فِي ذَلِكَ ] لَمَّا تَجَلَّى عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ جَحْشٍ وَأَصْحَابِهِ مَا كَانُوا فِيهِ حِينَ نَزَلَ الْقُرْآنُ طَمِعُوا فِي الْأَجْرِ، فَقَالُوا: «يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَنَطْمَعُ أَنْ تَكُونَ لَنَا غَزْوَةٌ نُعْطَى فِيهَا أَجْرَ الْمُجَاهِدِينَ» ؟ فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَبَارَكَ وَتَعَالَى: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَالَّذِينَ هَاجَرُوا وَجَاهَدُوا فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ أُولَئِكَ يَرْجُونَ رَحْمَتَ اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ [الْبَقَرَةُ 218] فَوَضَعَهُمُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى مِنْ ذَلِكَ عَلَى أَعْظَمِ الرَّجَاءِ.
Translation
✧ [Ibn Jaḥsh's hope for the reward and what was revealed concerning that] When what they had been in was cleared from ʿAbd Allāh b. Jaḥsh and his companions when the Qurʾān was revealed, they hoped for the reward, and they said: "O Messenger of Allah, may we hope that we will have a raid in which we are given the reward of the mujāhidūn?" So Allah, blessed and exalted is He, revealed: Indeed, those who have believed and those who have emigrated and fought in the cause of Allah — those expect the mercy of Allah, and Allah is Forgiving and Merciful [al-Baqarah 218]. Thus Allah, exalted is He, placed them, in that regard, upon the greatest hope.
