The account of the pact and what occurred in its story and its annulment
[ سَعْيُ هِشَامٍ فِي ضَمِّ الْمُطْعِمِ بْنِ عَدِيٍّ لَهُ ] فَذَهَبَ إلَى الْمُطْعِمِ بْنِ عَدِيِّ ( بْنِ نَوْفَلِ بْنِ عَبْدِ مَنَافٍ ) فَقَالَ لَهُ: يَا مُطْعِمُ أَقَدْ رَضِيتَ أَنْ يَهْلِكَ بَطْنَانِ مِنْ بَنِي عَبْدِ مَنَافٍ، وَأَنْتَ شَاهِدٌ عَلَى ذَلِكَ، مُوَافِقٌ لِقُرَيْشِ فِيهِ أَمَا وَاَللَّهِ لَئِنْ أَمْكَنْتُمُوهُمْ مِنْ هَذِهِ لَتَجِدُنَّهُمْ إلَيْهَا مِنْكُمْ سِرَاعًا؛ قَالَ وَيْحَكَ فَمَاذَا أَصْنَعُ إنَّمَا أَنَا رَجُلٌ وَاحِدٌ، قَالَ: قَدْ وَجَدْتَ ثَانِيًا؛ قَالَ: مَنْ هُوَ ؟ قَالَ: أَنَا، قَالَ: أَبْغِنَا ثَالِثًا، قَالَ: قَدْ فَعَلْتُ، قَالَ: مَنْ هُوَ ؟ قَالَ: زُهَيْرُ بْنُ أَبِي أُمَيَّةَ، قَالَ: أَبْغِنَا رَابِعًا.
Translation
✧ [ Hishām's effort to bring al-Muṭʿim b. ʿAdī to his side ] He went to al-Muṭʿim b. ʿAdī (b. Nawfal b. ʿAbd Manāf) and said to him: "O Muṭʿim, have you accepted that two clans of Banū ʿAbd Manāf should perish while you witness this, agreeing with Quraysh in it? By God, if you hand them over for this, you will find them rushing toward it from you." He said: "Woe to you! What should I do? I am only one man." He said: "You have found a second." He said: "Who is he?" He said: "I." He said: "Find us a third." He said: "I have done so." He said: "Who is he?" He said: "Zuhayr b. Abī Umayya." He said: "Find us a fourth."
