Translation

✧ [The Death of al-Muṭṭalib and the Poetry Recited in Mourning for Him] Then al-Muṭṭalib died at Radmān in the land of Yemen. A man of the Arabs said, mourning him: The pilgrims have gone thirsty after al-Muṭṭalib, after the great bowls and the flowing drink. Would that Quraysh after him were in hardship. And Maṭrūd b. Kaʿb al-Khuzāʿī said, mourning al-Muṭṭalib and all the sons of ʿAbd Manāf together when the news of Nawfal b. ʿAbd Manāf's death reached him—Nawfal being the last of them to die: O night that stirred up my nights, one of the hard, cruel nights. And what I endure of griefs and what I have suffered of the calamity of deaths. When I remember my brother Nawfal, he reminds me of the ancient ones. He reminds me of the red loincloths and the yellow, new robes. Four, each of them a lord, sons of lords for lords. One dead at Radmān, one dead at Salmān, and one dead near Ghazzah. And one dead who was laid in a grave at al-Maḥjūb, east of al-Bunayyāt. The most sincere of them is ʿAbd Manāf, so they are safe from the blame of any blamer. Truly al-Mughīrāt and their sons are among the best of the living and the dead. The name of ʿAbd Manāf was al-Mughīrah. The first of the sons of ʿAbd Manāf to die was Hāshim, at Ghazzah in the land of Syria; then ʿAbd Shams at Makkah; then al-Muṭṭalib at Radmān in the land of Yemen; then Nawfal at Salmān on the side of Iraq. It was said to Maṭrūd—as they claim—: "You have spoken, and spoken well. If it had been more excellent than what you said, it would have been finer." He said: "Give me some nights." He waited some days, then said: O eye, grieve and let tears flow and pour forth, and weep for the noble one of Kaʿb, al-Mughīrāt. O eye, gush with tears and take pains, and weep for the hidden treasure of my soul in times of calamity. And weep for every overflowing one, a trusted brother, huge in generosity, bestower of great gifts. Pure in nature, lofty in aspiration, well-formed, firm in disposition, bearing great matters. Difficult to approach, not weak nor reliant on others, decisive in resolve, squandering precious things. A falcon who took his place among Kaʿb, when they are traced, in the very midst of glory and the high, lofty ones. Then lament the overflowing and the most overflowing, Muṭṭalib, and shed tears abundantly after floods of tears. He has become today a stranger from us at Radmān; alas, my grief for him among the dead. And weep—woe to you if you are weeping—for ʿAbd Shams at the east of al-Bunayyāt. And for Hāshim in a grave in the middle of a desolate land, where winds blow over him near Ghazzah. And Nawfal, who was, apart from the people, my special one, has become at Salmān in a tomb in a waterless desert. I have never met their like among non-Arabs or Arabs, when dark mounts carried them away. Their abodes have become empty of them, though they used to be an ornament in the night raids. Did time destroy them, or did their swords grow blunt, or does everyone who lives carry the provisions of death? After them, I have come to be content with people's cheerful faces and greetings. O eye, weep for Abū al-Shuʿth, the sorrowful ones weep for him, grieving like afflicted ones. They weep for the noblest of those who walk on foot; they wail for him with tears after sobs. They weep for a person of long reach, possessing generosity, refusing humiliation, dispeller of great difficulties. They weep for ʿAmr al-ʿUlā when his fall came, generous in nature, smiling in the evenings. They weep for him, humbled in grief; how long that grief and wailing lasts. They weep when time exposed them; cheeks green like feverish ones. Girding their waists because of what time brought of the events of calamities. I pass my night watching the stars from pain; I weep, and my little daughters weep with me in sorrow. Among the stallions there is no equal or rival for them, nor for those they left, any remnant like them. Their sons are the best of sons, and their souls are the best of souls under the strain of oaths. How many they gave of swift, noble, lively steeds, and of mares taken as booty among swift horses. And of Indian swords, pure, and of spears like the ropes of wells. And of gifts with which they showed favor, when asked, in giving presents. If I counted and the counters counted with me, I would not finish recounting those pleasant deeds of theirs. They are the ones who boast when a people vie in glory, with pure lineages. The ornament of the houses whose dwellings they left, which have become desolate and empty of them. I say, while the eye's tears do not cease: may God not make distant the people of calamities. Ibn Hishām said: "al-Fajr" means giving. Abū Khirāsh al-Hudhalī said: My guests were made lean by Jamīl b. Maʿmar, at a place of giving to which widows resort. Ibn Isḥāq said: "Abū al-Shuʿth, the sorrowful ones" refers to Hāshim b. ʿAbd Manāf.
