Translation
✧ The Day of Khazāz One account of it is that a king among the kings of Yemen held captives from Muḍar, Rabīʿah, and Quḍāʿah. A delegation of notables from Banū Maʿadd came to him, among them: Sadūs b. Shaybān b. Dhuhl b. Thaʿlabah, ʿAwf b. Muḥallim b. Dhuhl b. Shaybān, ʿAwf b. ʿAmr b. Jusham b. Rabīʿah b. Zayd b. Manāt b. ʿĀmir al-Ḍiḥyān, and Jusham b. Dhuhl b. Hilāl b. Rabīʿah b. Zayd Manāt b. ʿĀmir al-Ḍiḥyān. A man from Bahrāʾ called ʿUbayd b. Qurād met them, and he was among the captives and was a poet. He asked them to include him among the number of those for whom they interceded. They spoke to the king about him and about the captives, and he granted them to them. ʿUbayd b. Qurād al-Bahrāwī said: My soul be ransom for ʿAwf of deeds and ʿAwf, and for Ibn Hilāl, Jusham — they rescued me after I had fallen, grasping the two straps of the girth. Were it not for Sadūs, when war had bared its teeth at me, my foot would have slipped in my sandal. I called out to Bahrāʾ that they might hear, and there is no deafness in their ears. And before it, Qāsiṭ protected Maʿadd whenever a mighty one bit down. The king detained some of the delegation with him as hostages and said to the rest: "Bring me the chiefs of your people so that I may take covenants of obedience to me from them, otherwise I shall kill your companions." They returned to their people and told them the news. Kulayb Wāʾil sent to Rabīʿah and gathered them, and Maʿadd assembled around him. He is one of the group around whom Maʿadd assembled, as we shall mention in the account of Kulayb's slaying. When they had assembled around him, he marched with them and placed at their vanguard al-Saffāḥ al-Taghlibī, who is Salamah b. Khālid b. Kaʿb b. Zuhayr b. Taym b. Usāmah b. Mālik b. Bakr b. Ḥubayb b. Taghlib. He commanded them to light a fire on Khazāz so that they might be guided by it. Khazāz is a mountain at Ṭakhfah, between al-Baṣrah and Makkah, and it is near Sāliʿ, which is also a mountain. He said to him: "If the enemy overwhelms you, light two fires." News of Rabīʿah's gathering and march reached Madhḥij, and they advanced with their hosts, called to arms those tribes of Yemen adjacent to them, and marched against them. When the people of Tihāmah heard of Madhḥij's march, they joined Rabīʿah. Madhḥij reached Khazāz at night, and al-Saffāḥ raised two fires. When Kulayb saw the two fires, he advanced to them with the hosts and caught up with them. They met at Khazāz and fought a fierce battle in which they caused much killing. Madhḥij was routed and its hosts dispersed. Al-Saffāḥ said of that: On a night I spent lighting a fire on Khazāz, I guided battalions that were bewildered, they had gone astray from sleeplessness, and had it not been for the people's sleeplessness, I reckon they would have been guided. Al-Farazdaq said, addressing Jarīr and satirizing him: Were it not for the horsemen of Taghlib, daughter of Wāʾil, the enemy would have entered upon you in every place. They struck the ṣanāʾiʿ and the kings, and lit two fires that rose above all fires. It is said that no one knows who was the commander on the Day of Khazāz, because ʿAmr b. Kulthūm, who is the son of Kulayb's daughter, says: We, on the morning when fire was lit on Khazāz, provided support above the support of the supporters. If his grandfather had been the commander, he would have mentioned him and would not have boasted that he was merely support. Then he made those who witnessed Khazāz mutually supporting one another, saying: We were the right flank when we met, and the left flank were the sons of our father, so they charged fiercely among those next to them, and we charged fiercely among those next to us. It was said to him: "You have claimed sole precedence over your brothers," meaning Muḍar. And when he mentioned his grandfather in the ode, he said: And before him, from us, the striver Kulayb, so which glory is there that we have not held? Thus he did not claim leadership for him on the Day of Khazāz, though it is the noblest thing for which he might have boasted of him. Ḥubayb, with ḍammah on the unpointed ḥāʾ, fatḥah on the single-pointed bāʾ, sukūn on the yāʾ beneath which are two dots, and at its end another single-pointed bāʾ.
