Genealogy of Our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Some Accounts of His Forefathers and Ancestors
[ تَوَلِّي بَنِي سَعْدٍ أَمْرَ الْبَيْتِ بَعْدَ صُوفَةَ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: فَإِذَا فَرَغُوا مِنْ رَمْيِ الْجِمَارِ وَأَرَادُوا النَّفْرَ مِنْ مِنًى، أَخَذَتْ صُوفَةُ بِجَانِبَيْ الْعَقَبَةِ، فَحَبَسُوا النَّاسَ وَقَالُوا: أَجِيزِى صُوفَةَ، فَلَمْ يَجُزْ أَحَدٌ مِنْ النَّاسِ حَتَّى يَمُرُّوا، فَإِذَا نَفَرَتْ صُوفَةُ وَمَضَتْ خُلِّيَ سَبِيلُ النَّاسِ فَانْطَلَقُوا بَعْدَهُمْ فَكَانُوا كَذَلِكَ حَتَّى انْقَرَضُوا، فَوَرِثَهُمْ ذَلِكَ مِنْ بَعْدِهِمْ بِالْقُعْدُدِ بَنُو سَعْدِ بْنِ زَيْدِ مَنَاةَ بْنِ تَمِيمٍ، وَكَانَتْ مِنْ بَنِي سَعْدٍ فِي آلِ صَفْوَانَ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ شِجْنَةَ. [ نَسَبُ صَفْوَانَ ] قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: صَفْوَانُ بْنُ جُنَابِ بْنِ شِجْنَةَ بْنِ عُطَارِدَ بْنِ عَوْفِ بْنِ كَعْبِ بْنِ سَعْدِ بْنِ زَيْدِ مَنَاةَ بْنِ تَمِيمٍ. [ صَفْوَانُ وَكَرِبٌ وَالْإِجَازَةُ فِي الْحَجِّ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَكَانَ صَفْوَانُ هُوَ الَّذِي يُجِيزُ لِلنَّاسِ بِالْحَجِّ مِنْ عَرَفَةَ، ثُمَّ بَنَوْهُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ، حَتَّى كَانَ آخِرَهُمْ الَّذِي قَامَ عَلَيْهِ الْإِسْلَامُ، كَرِبُ بْنُ صَفْوَانَ، وَقَالَ أَوْسُ بْنُ تَمِيمِ بْنِ مَغْرَاءَ السَّعْدِيُّ: : لَا يَبْرَحُ النَّاسُ مَا حَجُّوا مُعَرَّفَهُمْ حَتَّى يُقَالَ أَجِيزُوا آلَ صَفْوَانَا قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: هَذَا الْبَيْتُ فِي قَصِيدَةٍ لِأَوْسِ بْنِ مَغْرَاءَ.
Translation
✧ [ The Banū Saʿd Assuming Authority over the House after Ṣūfah ] Ibn Isḥāq said: When they finished the stoning of the jamarāt and wished to depart from Minā, Ṣūfah took hold of both sides of the ʿAqabah and detained the people, saying: "Pass through, O Ṣūfah." None of the people passed until they had gone by. When Ṣūfah departed and moved on, the way was left open for the people, and they set out after them. Thus they remained until they became extinct. Then the Banū Saʿd b. Zayd Manāh b. Tamīm inherited that from them by virtue of closer descent, and it belonged among the Banū Saʿd to the family of Ṣafwān b. al-Ḥārith b. Shijnah. [ The Lineage of Ṣafwān ] Ibn Hishām said: Ṣafwān b. Junāb b. Shijnah b. ʿUṭārid b. ʿAwf b. Kaʿb b. Saʿd b. Zayd Manāh b. Tamīm. [ Ṣafwān and Karib and the Permission to Depart in the Pilgrimage ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ṣafwān was the one who gave permission to the people to depart in the pilgrimage from ʿArafah, and then his sons after him, until the last of them, the one in whose lifetime Islam arose, was Karib b. Ṣafwān. Aws b. Tamīm b. Maghrāʾ al-Saʿdī said: : The people do not cease, as long as they perform the pilgrimage, their standing at ʿArafah, until it is said: "Give permission to depart, O family of Ṣafwān." Ibn Hishām said: This verse is in a poem by Aws b. Maghrāʾ.
