✧ Account of the Khurasani ghazis with Rukn al-Dawla In this year, in Ramadan, a great multitude went out from Khurasan, reaching twenty thousand, to al-Rayy with the intention of a military expedition. Their news reached Rukn al-Dawla, along with the great size of their gathering and the corruption they had wrought in the outskirts of his lands, and that their leaders had not restrained them from that. His teacher Abu al-Fadl ibn al-ʿAmid, who was his vizier, advised him to prevent them from entering his lands while they were gathered together, but he said: "Let not the kings speak that I feared a gathering of ghazis." He advised him to delay them until he could assemble his army, for his troops were scattered in their various duties, but he would not accept it from him. He said to him: "I fear that they may have a secret arrangement with the ruler of Khurasan against your lands and your state," but he paid no heed to his words. When they arrived at al-Rayy, their leaders assembled, among them al-Qaffal the jurist, and attended the assembly of Ibn al-ʿAmid and requested money to spend. He made promises to them, but they became excessive in their demands and said: "We want the entire land tax of these lands, for it belongs to the public treasury. The Byzantines have done to the Muslims what has reached you, and they have seized your lands, and likewise the Armenians. We are ghazis, poor men, and wayfarers, so we have a better right to the money than you." They also requested an army to go out with them and became extreme in their proposals. Ibn al-ʿAmid then knew the wickedness of their intentions and was certain of what he had suspected of them. He treated them gently and dissimulated with them, but they turned from him to reviling the Daylamites, cursing them, and declaring them infidels. Then they rose from him and began to command the right and forbid the wrong, and they robbed the common people under the pretext of that. Then they stirred up sedition and fought a group of Daylamites until night separated them. The next morning they resumed fighting, entered the city, plundered the house of the vizier Ibn al-ʿAmid, and wounded him, but he escaped death. Rukn al-Dawla went out against them with his companions, but he was few in number, and the Khurasanis defeated him. Had they pursued him, they would have annihilated him and taken the town from him, but they turned back from him because night overtook them. When morning came, Rukn al-Dawla sent messages to them and dealt gently with them, hoping that they would depart from his land, but they did not. They were waiting for reinforcements to come to them from the ruler of Khurasan, for they had a promise among themselves concerning those lands. Then they gathered and headed for the town to seize it. Rukn al-Dawla went out against them and fought them, and he ordered a number of his companions to go to a place where they could be seen, then to raise a great cloud of dust and to send someone to inform him that the armies had arrived. They did that. His companions had been afraid because of their small number and the large number of their enemy, but when they saw the dust and someone came to tell them that his reinforcements had joined them, their spirits were strengthened. Rukn al-Dawla said to them: "Charge against these people, perhaps we will be victorious over them before our companions arrive, and the victory and booty will be ours." They shouted the takbir and made a true charge, and victory was theirs. The Khurasanis were routed, and many of them were killed, and more were captured than killed. The rest scattered and sought safe-conduct, and Rukn al-Dawla granted them safe-conduct. A group of them had entered the town shouting the takbir as if they were fighting the infidels, killing everyone they saw in the attire of the Daylamites, and saying: "These are Rafidis." News reached them of the defeat of their companions and that they were heading to the Daylamites to kill them, but Rukn al-Dawla prevented them and granted them safe-conduct, and opened the way for them to return. After them came about two thousand men with equipment and weapons, and Rukn al-Dawla fought them, defeated them, and inflicted heavy losses among them. Then he released the captives, ordered stipends for them, and sent them back to their lands. Ibrahim ibn al-Marzbān was with Rukn al-Dawla and left a good impression upon them.
