Then the year 353 AH began
ذِكْرُ حَصْرِ الرُّومِ طَرَسُوسَ وَالْمَصِّيصَةَ وَفِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ أَيْضًا نَزَلَ مَلِكُ الرُّومِ عَلَى طَرَسُوسَ وَحَصَرَهَا، وَجَرَى بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَ أَهْلِهَا حُرُوبٌ كَثِيرَةٌ سَقَطَ فِي بَعْضِهَا الدُّمُسْتُقُ بْنُ الشَّمَشْقِيقِ إِلَى الْأَرْضِ، وَكَادَ يُؤْسَرُ فَقَاتَلَ عَلَيْهِ الرُّومُ وَخَلَّصُوهُ، وَأَسَرَ أَهْلُ طَرَسُوسَ بِطْرِيقًا كَبِيرًا مِنْ بَطَارِقَةِ الرُّومِ، وَرَحَلَ الرُّومُ عَنْهُمْ، وَتَرَكُوا عَسْكَرًا عَلَى الْمَصِّيصَةِ مَعَ الدُّمُسْتُقِ، فَحَصَرَهَا ثَلَاثَةَ أَشْهُرٍ لَمْ يَمْنَعْهُمْ مِنْهَا أَحَدٌ، فَاشْتَدَّ الْغَلَاءُ عَلَى الرُّومِ، وَكَانَ شَدِيدًا قَبْلَ نُزُولِهِمْ، فَلِهَذَا طَمِعُوا فِي الْبِلَادِ لِعَدَمِ الْأَقْوَاتِ عِنْدَهُمْ، فَلَمَّا نَزَلَ الرُّومُ زَادَ شِدَّةً، وَكَثُرَ الْوَبَاءُ أَيْضًا، فَمَاتَ مِنَ الرُّومِ كَثِيرٌ، فَاضْطُرُّوا إِلَى الرَّحِيلِ.
Translation
✧ Account of the Byzantines' siege of Tarsus and al-Maṣṣīṣah In this year as well, the king of the Byzantines encamped at Tarsus and besieged it. Many wars took place between them and its people, in some of which al-Dumustuq b. al-Shamashqīq fell to the ground and was nearly captured, but the Byzantines fought for him and rescued him. The people of Tarsus captured a great patrician from among the patricians of the Byzantines. Then the Byzantines departed from them, leaving an army at al-Maṣṣīṣah with al-Dumustuq. He besieged it for three months, and no one prevented them from doing so. Prices rose severely among the Byzantines, and it had been severe before their encampment; for this reason they coveted the lands, due to the lack of provisions among them. When the Byzantines encamped, it increased in severity, and plague also spread, so many of the Byzantines died, and they were compelled to depart.
