He heard from Aḥmad b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Narsī, Mūsā b. Sahl al-Washshāʾ, al-Kudaymī, and others. He was abundant in knowledge and great in asceticism. Ibn Rizqawayh and Ibn Bishrān narrated from him, and the last to relate from him was Abū ʿAlī b. Shādhān. From ʿAlī b. Abī ʿAlī, from his father, who said: Among the transmitters, none was ever seen to have a better memory than they: Abū ʿUmar Ghulām Thaʿlab dictated from memory thirty thousand sheets on language, as far as I have heard. All of his books that are in people's hands were dictated by him without any written compilation. Because of the vastness of his memory, he was accused of lying. He would be asked about something that the questioner thought he had fabricated, and he would answer it. Then someone else would ask him about it after a year, by prior arrangement, and he would give exactly the same answer. Someone from the people of Baghdād informed me, saying: We used to pass over the bridge of al-Ṣarāh on our way to him with a group. They discussed his lying. One of them said: I will alter the wording for him regarding al-qanṭarah (the bridge/arch) and ask him about it. When we came before him, he said to him: O shaykh, what does al-qanṭarah mean among the Arabs? He said, such-and-such, and he mentioned something that I have forgotten. He said: We laughed and completed the session and left. Then, months later, we remembered the incident, and we sent a different man. He asked him: What is al-qanṭarah? He replied: Was I not asked about this question so many months ago, and I said it is such-and-such? He said: We did not know which of the two matters to marvel at more: his intelligence, if it was knowledge, then it was an elegant breadth; and if it was a lie he fabricated on the spot and then memorized it, such that when he was asked about it, he recalled the time and the question and gave that same answer, then it is even more remarkable. My father said: Muʿizz al-Dawlah had entrusted the police of Baghdād to a Turkish mamlūk known as Khawājā. The news reached Abū ʿUmar while he was dictating al-Yāqūtah (the Ruby). [When they came to him] he said: Write: yāqūtat khawājā. Al-khawāj in the language means hunger. Then he branched out from this into a section and dictated it. People considered that great, and they investigated it. Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥātimī said: We found in the dictations of al-Ḥāmiḍ, from Thaʿlab, from Ibn al-Aʿrābī: al-khawāj means hunger. From Abū al-Qāsim ʿAlī b. al-Muḥsin, from someone who related to him: Abū ʿUmar al-Zāhid used to tutor the son of the qāḍī Abū ʿUmar. One day he dictated to the boy about thirty questions on language, mentioning their unusual aspects, and concluded them with two verses of poetry. Abū Bakr b. Durayd, Ibn al-Anbārī, and Ibn Miqsam were present with Abū ʿUmar the qāḍī. He presented those questions to them, and they recognized none of them, and they rejected the poetry. The qāḍī said to them: What do you say about them? Ibn al-Anbārī said to him: I am busy compiling Mushkil al-Qurʾān, and I will not say anything. Ibn Miqsam said the like because of his preoccupation with the variant readings. Ibn Durayd said: These questions are among the fabrications of Abū ʿUmar, and none of them has any basis in the language! They left. That reached Abū ʿUmar, so he met with the qāḍī and asked him to bring out the dīwāns of a group of ancient poets whom he specified. The qāḍī opened his library and brought out those dīwāns. Abū ʿUmar kept going through each question and producing for it a supporting citation from one of those dīwāns, presenting it to the qāḍī, until he had covered all of them. Then he said: These two verses were recited by Thaʿlab in the presence of the qāḍī, and the qāḍī wrote them in his own handwriting on the back of the qāḍī's book. The qāḍī brought the book and found the two verses on its back in his own handwriting, just as Abū ʿUmar had mentioned. The story reached Ibn Durayd, and he never mentioned Abū ʿUmar with his own wording until he died. Abū al-Ḥasan b. al-Marzubān said: Ibn Māsī used to send Abū ʿUmar his sufficiency, which he would spend on himself. He stopped that for a period for some excuse. Then he sent him what had been withheld all at once, and wrote him a note apologizing for the delay. He returned it and ordered those in his presence to write on the back of his note: You honored us, so you owned us; then you turned away from us, so you relieved us. Aḥmad b. ʿAlī said: There is no doubt that Ibn Māsī is Ibrāhīm b. Ayyūb, and Allah knows best. Abū ʿUmar died on Sunday and was buried on Monday, the thirteenth of Dhū al-Qaʿdah of this year. He was buried in the ṣuffah (portico) opposite the grave of Maʿrūf. After him were buried Abū Bakr al-Ādamī and ʿAbd al-Ṣamad b. ʿAlī al-Ṭashtī. The three graves are visible. 2564 - Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Yūsuf b. Yaʿqūb b. Yazīd, Abū Bakr al-Ṭāʾī al-Kūfī al-Khazzāz. He heard from a group. He came to Baghdād and related ḥadīth there. Ibn Rizqawayh and others narrated from him. He was trustworthy. He died in Dimashq in Ramaḍān of this year. 2565 - Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Ḥasan b. Jaʿfar b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib [Abū al-Ḥasan], known as Abū Qīrāṭ. He was the naqīb of the Ṭālibiyyīn in Baghdād. He related from his father and from Sulaymān b. ʿAlī al-Kātib. Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl al-Warrāq narrated from him. He died in Baghdād in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. 2566 - Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Aḥmad b. Rustum, Abū Bakr al-Mādharāʾī al-Kātib. He was born in al-ʿIrāq in the year two hundred and fifty-seven. He came to Miṣr with his brother Aḥmad, and they were in Miṣr with their father. Their father was in charge of the land tax of Miṣr for Abū al-Ḥasan Khumārawayh b. Aḥmad. Muḥammad had written down ḥadīth in Baghdād from Aḥmad b. ʿAbd al-Jabbār al-ʿUṭāridī and his generation. His books were burned, and what remained of his audition was with one of the scribes, from whom he heard it. Abū Muḥammad al-Ṣulḥī said: Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Mādharāʾī related to me in Miṣr. He was a venerable shaykh, great in wealth, rank, and glory, long in tenure over major offices. He had served as vizier for Khumārawayh b. Aḥmad b. Ṭūlūn, and he lived over ninety years. He said: I wrote for Khumārawayh b. Aḥmad when I was a youth. The duties mounted upon me, and the succession of tasks cut me off from examining the situations of the idle and attending to them. At my door there was an old shaykh from the elder scribes whose unemployment had grown long. I neglected his affair. Then I saw my father in a dream, as if he were saying to me: Woe to you, my son! Are you not ashamed before Allah to occupy yourself with your pleasures and your duties while people are perishing at your door in patience and in emaciation? This is so-and-so, one of the elder scribes, whose condition has come to the point that his trousers are torn, and he cannot buy replacements. He is like one dead from hunger, and you do not look into his affair. I would like his affair not to be neglected any more than this. He said: I woke up terrified and resolved to be kind to the shaykh. [And I slept] and morning came, and I had forgotten the shaykh's affair. I rode to the palace of Khumārawayh, and by Allah, while I was riding, the man appeared to me on a weak little mount. Then the man gestured to me, and his thigh was exposed, and he was wearing boots without trousers. When my eye fell on that, I remembered the dream, and I was utterly shaken. I stopped in my place and summoned him, and I said: O man, what made it permissible for you to abandon reminding me of your affair? Was there no one in the world who could deliver a note for you, or speak to me on your behalf? Now I have appointed you to such-and-such district, and I have assigned you a stipend every month of two hundred dīnārs. I have granted you from my treasury one thousand dīnārs as a gift and assistance for going out to it. I have ordered for you such-and-such garments. Take that and go forth. If your conduct in your administration is good, I will increase you and do more for you. He said: I assigned to him a servant to expedite all of that for him. Then I went on. The day had not ended before his condition had improved, and he went out to his post. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Mādharāʾī died in Shawwāl of this year. Among the notables who died in it: Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm Ṭabāṭabā b. Ismāʿīl b. Ibrāhīm b. Ḥasan b. Ḥasan b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib the noble Ḥasanī al-Rassī — a tribe of the ashrāf — Abū al-Qāsim al-Miṣrī the poet. He was the naqīb of the Ṭālibiyyīn in Miṣr. Among his poetry is his saying: She said to a phantom of a vision that visited me and departed: By Allah, describe him, neither diminish nor increase. But he said: I saw him; if he were dying of thirst and I said: Stop, do not approach the water, he would not approach. She said: You have spoken truly; fidelity in love is his habit. O, how cool was that which she said upon my liver! Ibn Khallikān said: He died on Tuesday night, five nights remaining in Shaʿbān of this year.
