✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year. 2474 - Tūzūn: We have already mentioned his reports and what he did with al-Muttaqī. He died with eight days remaining of al-Muḥarram, and a full year had not passed after his ugly deed and his neglect of the oaths he had sworn. 2475 - Sulaymān b. Isḥāq b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Khalīl, Abū Ayyūb al-Jallāb: He heard Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī. Ibn Ḥayyawayh narrated from him. He was trustworthy. He died in this year. 2476 - ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Bukayr, Abū al-Qāsim al-Tamīmī: He heard Ibn Qutaybah. Al-Dāraquṭnī narrated from him. He was trustworthy. He died in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. 2477 - ʿUmar b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū al-Qāsim al-Khiraqī: Author of the book "Al-Mukhtaṣar fī al-Fiqh" according to the school of Imam Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal. He was a jurist of discerning mind, of good expression, and eloquent. He had many works and legal derivations according to the school that did not become public, because he left Baghdad when the cursing of the Companions became apparent, and he deposited his books in Darb Sulaymān. The house in which the books were burned down. He died in Damascus in this year. 2478 - Muḥammad b. ʿĪsā [b. ʿAbd Allāh], Abū ʿAbd Allāh, known as Ibn Abī Mūsā: The jurist according to the school of the Iraqis. Al-Muttaqī li-Llāh appointed him to the judiciary in Baghdad, then dismissed him. Al-Mustakfī bi-Llāh reinstated him. He had abundant knowledge, good conduct, and dignity. He was trustworthy, renowned for poverty. No fault was found against him in any part of his tenure. Thieves raided his house and took everything in it, which was nothing worth mentioning. They thought he had wealth. They struck him a blow that severely wounded him. He fled across the rooftops and threw himself into the house of a neighbor of his, fell, and died. That was in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year. 2479 - Muḥammad b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. ʿAbd Allāh, Abū al-Faḍl al-Sulamī, the vizier: He was a jurist and debater. He heard hadith in Khurasan, Nishapur, Rayy, Baghdad, and Kufa. He dictated and was a memorizer. He composed works. He used to fast on Mondays and Thursdays and never abandoned the night prayer or writing. He served as vizier to the sultan while maintaining this practice. He used to ask God Almighty for martyrdom. One night he heard the clamor of horses and said, "What is this?" They said, "The rabble of the army have gathered to incite one another, saying that you are to blame for the delay of our provisions." He called for a barber, who shaved his head. Water was heated for him in a tent with an oven. He purified himself, performed ritual bathing, put on the shroud, and spent the night praying. The sultan sent someone to restrain them from him, but they refused. They killed him while he was prostrating, in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. 2480 - Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭughj, Abū Bakr: He was brave and extremely vigilant in his wars. His army comprised four hundred thousand men. He had eight thousand mamlūks who guarded him in shifts, each shift one thousand mamlūks. Servants were entrusted with the side of his tent. Still he would not feel secure until he went to the tents of the bedding servants and slept there. Al-Rāḍī bi-Llāh gave him the title al-Ikhshīd, because he was from Farghānah. Whoever ruled Farghānah was called "al-Ikhshīd," just as the Byzantines call their king "Caesar," the Persians "Kisrā," Yemen "Tubbaʿ," the Muslims "the Caliph," the king of Ushrūsanah "al-Afshīn," the king of Khwārizm "Khwārizm Shāh," the king of the Turks "Khāqān," the king of Jurjān "Ṣūl," the king of Azerbaijan "Iṣbahbadh," and the king of Ṭabaristān "Sālār." He died in Damascus in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year. 2481 - Abū Bakr al-Shiblī: They disagreed about his name and lineage. It was said: Dulaf b. Jaʿfar; and it was said: Dulaf b. Jaḥdar; and it was said: Dulaf b. Jaʿtarah; and it was said: Dulaf b. Jaʿwanah; and it was said: Jaʿfar b. Yūnus; and it was said: Jaḥdar b. Dulaf. He was from the people of Ushrūsanah, from a village there called Shibliyyah. His maternal uncle was the amir of amirs in Alexandria. Al-Shiblī was born in Surra man raʾā. He was the chamberlain of al-Muwaffaq, and he appointed Damāwand as his fief. His father was the chamberlain of chamberlains. One day al-Shiblī attended the gathering of Khayr al-Nassāj and repented. Then he returned to Damāwand and said, "Al-Muwaffaq has appointed me over your town, so absolve me." They did so. He accompanied the poor. Al-Junayd used to say, "The crown of these people is al-Shiblī." ʿAlī b. al-Muthannā al-Tamīmī said: I entered upon al-Shiblī in his house one day while he was agitated and saying: "For your distance, one whose habit is nearness cannot bear, Nor can one whom love has enslaved endure your veil. If the eye does not see you, the heart may see you." ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAlī al-Tamīmī said: Jaʿfar b. Nuṣayr asked Bakrān al-Dīnawarī—who used to serve al-Shiblī—"What did you witness from him, meaning at his death?" He said: He said to me, "I owe a dirham of injustice; I have given alms on behalf of its owner by the thousands, yet no concern weighs on my heart more than it." Then he said, "Perform ablution for me for prayer." I did so, but I forgot to run my fingers through his beard. His tongue was already stilled. He grasped my hand and put it into his beard. Then he died. Jaʿfar wept and said, "What do you say of a man who at the end of his life did not miss a single courtesy of the Sacred Law?" Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. Mūsā said: I heard Abū Naṣr al-Harawī say: Al-Shiblī used to say, "This side is guarded only because of me"—meaning from the Daylamites. He died on Friday, and the Daylamites crossed to the eastern side on Saturday. [The compiler said: I heard Muḥammad b. ʿUmar al-Armawī say: I heard Abū] al-Ḥusayn ibn al-Muhtadī say: I heard Abū Ḥafṣ ʿUmar b. ʿUbayd b. Taʿwīdh say: Abū Bakr, the servant of al-Shiblī, known as Bukayr, narrated to me. He said: Al-Shiblī felt relief from a pain he had on Friday, the last day of Dhū al-Ḥijjah in the year 334. He said to me, "Bukayr, do you intend to go to the congregational mosque?" I said, "Yes." He said: When we reached the Warraqīn in the eastern side, an old man met us. Bukayr said to me, "Tomorrow I will have something important with this old man." I said, "My master, who is he?" He said, "This one approaching," and gestured with his hand toward the old man. He said: When it was Saturday night, the mercy of God be upon him, he passed away. It was said to me, "In such-and-such a place there is a righteous old man who washes the dead." I came to the door and knocked, saying, "Peace be upon you." He said to me, "Has al-Shiblī died?" I said, "Yes." He came out to me, and behold, he was the old man who had met us the day before. I said, "There is no god but God." He said to me, "What is the matter with you?" I said, "My master, I ask you by God, how did you know of al-Shiblī's death?" He said to me, "May your mother lose you! How ignorant you are. How could al-Shiblī say that he would have something important with me?" Abū al-Qāsim al-Naḥḥās said: I heard Yūsuf b. Yaʿqūb al-Aṣbahānī say: Al-Adamī the reciter said: I saw in a dream as if everyone in the cemetery of al-Khayzurāniyyah was sitting on their graves. I said, "Whom are you waiting for?" They said, "We have been promised that a man will come to be buried among us, and God will grant our righteous and our sinful to him." He said: I went early and sat. Then the funeral procession of al-Shiblī came, and he was buried among them.
