Then the year 334 AH began

✧ Mention of the opposition of Abū ʿAlī against the amīr Nūḥ In this year, Abū ʿAlī b. Muḥtāj opposed the amīr Nūḥ, ruler of Khurāsān and Mā Warāʾ al-Nahr. The reason for that was that when Abū ʿAlī returned from Marw to Naysābūr and prepared to march to al-Rayy, the amīr Nūḥ sent to him an inspector to review the army, and the inspector treated them badly, dismissing some of them and reducing their pay, so their hearts turned away, and they marched while he was in that state. Added to that, Nūḥ sent with them someone to manage the affairs of the dīwān, and gave him the power to bind and loose and to spend, whereas all of that had belonged to Abū ʿAlī during the days of al-Saʿīd Naṣr b. Aḥmad, so his heart was alienated by that. Then he was dismissed from Khurāsān, and Ibrāhīm b. Sīmjūr was appointed over it, as we have mentioned. Then the appointed official treated the soldiers badly in their dealings, their needs, and their stipends, so they became even more averse. Some of them complained to one another while they were at Hamadhān, and they agreed to write to Ibrāhīm b. Aḥmad b. Ismāʿīl, the paternal uncle of Nūḥ, summoning him to come to them, pledge allegiance to him, and make him ruler of the lands. Ibrāhīm was at that time in al-Mawṣil in the service of Nāṣir al-Dawlah; the reason for his going there was what we mentioned before. When they agreed on that, they revealed it to Abū ʿAlī, and he forbade them from it, but they threatened to seize him if he opposed them, so he agreed to what they asked. They wrote to Ibrāhīm and informed him of their situation, and he set out to them with ninety horsemen. He arrived to them in Ramaḍān of this year, and Abū ʿAlī met him at Hamadhān, and they marched with him to al-Rayy in Shawwāl. When they reached it, Abū ʿAlī learned from his brother al-Faḍl of a letter he had written to the amīr Nūḥ informing him of their situation, so he seized him and that appointed official who had mistreated the soldiers, and marched to Naysābūr, leaving his deputies over al-Rayy and al-Jabal. The news reached the amīr Nūḥ, so he prepared and marched from Bukhārā to Marw. The soldiers had become weary of Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Ḥākim, the official in charge of affairs, because of his bad conduct. They said to Nūḥ: "The ḥākim has corrupted matters for you in Khurāsān, driven Abū ʿAlī to disobedience, and alienated the soldiers." They demanded that he be handed over to them, otherwise they would go over to his uncle Ibrāhīm and Abū ʿAlī. So he handed him over to them, and they killed him in Jumādā al-Ūlā of the year 335 [AH]. When Abū ʿAlī reached Naysābūr, there were Ibrāhīm b. Sīmjūr, Manṣūr b. Qarātakīn, and other commanders there. Abū ʿAlī won them over, so they inclined to him and joined him, and he entered it in Muḥarram of the year 335 [AH]. Then something he disliked appeared from Manṣūr, so he seized him. Then Abū ʿAlī and Ibrāhīm marched from Naysābūr in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of the year 335 [AH] to Marw, where the amīr Nūḥ was. Al-Faḍl, the brother of Abū ʿAlī, escaped from his prison; he tricked his guards and fled to Qūhistān, where he stayed. Abū ʿAlī marched to Marw, and when he approached it, many of Nūḥ's army came to him, and Nūḥ departed from it to Bukhārā. Abū ʿAlī took control of Marw in Jumādā al-Ūlā of the year 335 [AH] and stayed there for some days. Most of Nūḥ's soldiers came to him, and he marched towards Bukhārā and crossed the river to it. Nūḥ left it and went to Samarqand, and Abū ʿAlī entered Bukhārā in Jumādā al-Ākhirah of the year 335 AH. He had the khuṭbah delivered there for his uncle Ibrāhīm, and the people pledged allegiance to him. Then Abū ʿAlī learned from Ibrāhīm of an evil intention he harbored against him, so he parted from him and marched to Tirkistān. Ibrāhīm remained in Bukhārā. During that time, Abū ʿAlī released Manṣūr b. Qarātakīn, and he went to the amīr Nūḥ. Then Ibrāhīm secretly agreed with a group to abdicate from rule and return it to his brother's son, the amīr Nūḥ, while he himself would be commander of his army, and to join with him in attacking Abū ʿAlī. He called the people of Bukhārā to that, and they responded. They gathered and went out against Abū ʿAlī, whose companions had dispersed from him. He rode against them with horsemen and drove them back to the town in the ugliest manner, and wanted to burn the town. The elders of Bukhārā interceded with him, so he pardoned them and returned to his place. He summoned Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. Naṣr b. Aḥmad, the brother of the amīr Nūḥ, invested him with the emirate, pledged allegiance to him, and had the khuṭbah delivered for him in all the districts. Then Abū ʿAlī discovered the corrupt intentions of a group of soldiers, so he placed Abū Jaʿfar in the town, arranged what needed to be arranged, and left the town pretending to march to Samarqand while intending to return to al-Ṣaghāniyān and from there to Nasaf. When he left the town, he sent back a group of soldiers and attendants to Bukhārā and wrote to Nūḥ that he had vacated it. Then he marched to al-Ṣaghāniyān in Shaʿbān. When Abū ʿAlī departed from Bukhārā, Ibrāhīm and Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. Naṣr went out to Samarqand seeking safety with Nūḥ, showing regret for what they had done. He drew them near, accepted them, promised them, and returned to Bukhārā in Ramaḍān. In those days, Nūḥ killed Ṭaghān the chamberlain, blinded his uncle Ibrāhīm and his brothers Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad and Aḥmad. The armies and soldiers returned and gathered around him, and he repaired the corruption. As for al-Faḍl b. Muḥammad, the brother of Abū ʿAlī, when he fled from his brother as we mentioned and reached Qūhistān, he gathered a large force and marched towards Naysābūr, where Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Razzāq was on behalf of Abū ʿAlī. Al-Faḍl left it, and they met and fought. Al-Faḍl was defeated with only one horseman remaining with him, and he reached Bukhārā, where the amīr Nūḥ honored him, treated him well, and he remained in his service.
