Translation

✧ Mention of the reason for the advancement of ʿAlī b. Būyah ( The reason for the rise ) of ʿAlī b. Būyah ( from among them ) — after the divine decrees — was that he was generous, forbearing, and courageous. When Mardāwīj appointed him over Karaj, and appointed with him a group of the trusted commanders to the provinces, and wrote for them the covenants, they marched to al-Rayy, where Washmakīr b. Ziyār, the brother of Mardāwīj, was, and with him was al-Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad, titled al-ʿAmīd, the father of Abū al-Faḍl who served as vizier to Rukn al-Dawlah b. Būyah; al-ʿAmīd was at that time the vizier of Mardāwīj. ʿImād al-Dawlah had with him a dapple-gray mule, one of the finest that could be, which he offered for sale. Its price reached two hundred dinars. It was offered to al-ʿAmīd, who took it and sent its price. When the price was brought to ʿImād al-Dawlah, he took ten dinars from it and returned the rest, and sent with it a fine gift. Then Mardāwīj regretted what he had done in appointing those commanders over the provinces, and he wrote to his brother Washmakīr and to al-ʿAmīd, ordering them to prevent them from marching to their provinces, and if any of them had already departed, he was to be turned back. The letters would reach al-ʿAmīd before Washmakīr, and he would read them and then present them to Washmakīr. When al-ʿAmīd saw this letter, he sent to ʿImād al-Dawlah ordering him to march immediately to his province, traveling by forced stages. So he departed at once; it was sunset. As for al-ʿAmīd, when morning came, he presented the letter to Washmakīr, who prevented the rest of the commanders from leaving al-Rayy and demanded the return of the documents they held for the provinces. Washmakīr wanted to send someone after ʿImād al-Dawlah to bring him back, but al-ʿAmīd said: "He will not return willingly, and he may fight whoever goes after him and leave our obedience." So he left him alone. ʿImād al-Dawlah marched to Karaj, treated the people well, and was gentle with the tax officials of the provinces. They wrote to Mardāwīj praising him and describing his control of the region and his governance. He conquered fortresses that had belonged to the Khurramiyyah, and obtained from them many treasures, all of which he spent on winning over men, gifts, and grants. His fame spread, and people sought him out and loved him. Mardāwīj was at that time in Ṭabaristān. When he returned to al-Rayy, he released money to a group of his commanders for Karaj. ʿImād al-Dawlah won them over, gave them gifts, and treated them well, until they inclined toward him and loved obeying him. This reached Mardāwīj, who became alarmed and regretted sending those commanders to Karaj. He wrote to ʿImād al-Dawlah and those commanders summoning them to him, and he was gentle with them. But ʿImād al-Dawlah stalled him and busied himself with taking oaths of allegiance, warning them of Mardāwīj's harshness. They all answered him. He collected the taxes of Karaj, and Shayrazād, one of the leading Daylamite commanders, sought his protection. His resolve was strengthened by this, and he marched with them from Karaj to Iṣbahān, where al-Muẓaffar b. Yāqūt was with about ten thousand fighters, and over its land tax was Abū ʿAlī b. Rustum. ʿImād al-Dawlah sent to them both, seeking to win their sympathy and asking their permission to join them and enter into obedience to the caliph, so that he might proceed to the court in Baghdādh. They did not grant him that, and Abū ʿAlī was the more opposed of the two. It happened, by good fortune, that Abū ʿAlī died in those days, and Ibn Yāqūt came out from Iṣbahān a distance of three parasangs. Among his men were Jīl and Daylam, about six hundred men, who sought the protection of ʿImād al-Dawlah because of what they had heard of his generosity. Ibn Yāqūt's heart weakened, and ʿImād al-Dawlah's courage strengthened. He engaged him, and they fought a fierce battle. Ibn Yāqūt fled, and ʿImād al-Dawlah took possession of Iṣbahān and became great in the eyes of the people, because with nine hundred men he had defeated nearly ten thousand. This reached the caliph, who deemed it a great matter. News of this battle reached Mardāwīj and disturbed him, and he feared for the lands in his possession, ( and he was greatly grieved by that ).
