Translation
✧ Mention of his taking possession of the city of Mīla and his defeat When that was accomplished for Abū ʿAbd Allāh, he marched to the city of Mīla. A man from there named al-Ḥasan b. Aḥmad came to him and informed him of a vulnerable point of the town. He fought its people a fierce battle and seized the outskirts. They sought safe-conduct from him and he granted them safety, and he entered the city of Mīla. The news reached the emir of Ifrīqiya, who at that time was Ibrāhīm b. Aḥmad, so he dispatched his son al-Aḥwal with twelve thousand, and a like number followed them. The two met and the two armies fought, and Abū ʿAbd Allāh was defeated, and many of his companions were killed. Al-Aḥwal pursued him, but a great snowfall occurred and intervened between them. Abū ʿAbd Allāh marched to the mountain of Inkijān, and al-Aḥwal reached the city of Nāṣirūn, and burned it, and burned the city of Mīla, (and found no one in it). Abū ʿAbd Allāh built at Inkijān a house of emigration, and his companions repaired to it. Al-Aḥwal returned to Ifrīqiya. After their departure, Abū ʿAbd Allāh marched and seized as booty from what he saw of what they had left behind. The news of the death of Ibrāhīm came to him, and he rejoiced at it. Then came to him the news of the killing of his son Abū al-ʿAbbās and the accession of Ziyādat Allāh and his preoccupation with diversion and play, and his joy intensified. Al-Aḥwal had assembled a large army during the days of his brother Abū al-ʿAbbās, and met Abū ʿAbd Allāh, and al-Aḥwal was defeated. Al-Aḥwal remained near him, fighting him and preventing him from advancing. When Abū Muḍar Ziyādat Allāh became ruler of Ifrīqiya, he summoned al-Aḥwal and killed him, as we have mentioned. He was not cross-eyed, but he used to squint his eye when he prolonged his gaze, so he was nicknamed thus. When he was killed, the armies of Abū ʿAbd Allāh dispersed throughout the lands, and Abū ʿAbd Allāh began to say: "The Mahdī will come forth in these days and will possess the earth. Blessed is he who emigrates to me and obeys me!" He incited people against Abū Muḍar and disparaged him. All the ministers with Ziyādat Allāh were Shīʿa, so it did not grieve them that Abū ʿAbd Allāh should prevail, especially with what he mentioned to them of the miracles of the Mahdī, such as reviving the dead, turning back the sun from its setting place, and his possessing the entire earth. Abū ʿAbd Allāh kept sending to them, bewitching them and making them promises.
