✧ The March of al-Muwaffaq to al-Ahwāz and the Expulsion of the Zanj from It When Abū Aḥmad al-Muwaffaq had finished with al-Manṣūr, he set out toward al-Ahwāz to set it right and expel the Zanj from it. He ordered his son Abū al-ʿAbbās to precede him, and he ordered the repair of the road for the armies. He appointed his son Hārūn as his deputy over those he left of his army at Wāsiṭ, and Zīrak caught up with him and informed him of the return of the people of Ṭahthā to it, and he reassured the people. Al-Muwaffaq ordered the descent in the shadhā and the sumayriyyāt with Nuṣayr, and the pursuit of the defeated, and the falling upon them and upon any of the Zanj they captured, until he reached the city of the villain on the Nahr Abī al-Khaṣīb, and he marched. Al-Muwaffaq set out at the beginning of Jumādā al-Ākhirah from Wāsiṭ until he came to al-Sūs, and he ordered Masrūr to come to him, and he was his governor there, so he came to him. When the villain learned what al-Muwaffaq had done to Sulaymān b. Jāmiʿ and the Zanj, he feared that he would come to him while his companions were scattered from him, and he wrote to ʿAlī b. Abān to come to him, and he was at al-Ahwāz with thirty thousand. He left all that he had of food, beasts, sheep, and other things, and appointed Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā al-Kurunbāʾī as his deputy over it, but he did not remain, and he followed ʿAlī. The leader of the Zanj also wrote to Bahbūdh b. ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, who was at al-Fandam and al-Bāsiyān and what was connected to them, ordering him to come to him, so he left the stores he had and marched toward him. Al-Muwaffaq took possession of all that, and was strengthened by it for the war against the villain. When ʿAlī b. Abān departed from al-Ahwāz, a group of his companions remained behind there, about a thousand men, and they sent to al-Muwaffaq seeking safe-conduct, so he granted them safety, and they came to him, and he assigned stipends to them. Then he departed from al-Sūs to Jundaysābūr and Tustar, and he collected the revenues, and he sent to Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Kurdī, who had been afraid of him, and he granted him safety and pardoned him, and he sought from him money and troops. He came to him, and he treated him well. Then he departed to ʿAskar Mukram, and came to al-Ahwāz, then departed from it to Nahr al-Mubārak of the Furāt of al-Baṣrah, and he wrote to his son Hārūn to join him with the entire army at Nahr al-Mubārak, and the army met him at al-Mubārak in the middle of Rajab. When al-Muwaffaq had left Zīrak and Nuṣayr behind to pursue the Zanj, they descended until they reached al-Ubullah, and a man sought safe-conduct from them and informed them that the villain had sent against them a large number in shadhā and sumayriyyāt to the Tigris to prevent from it anyone who wanted it, for they intended the camp of Nuṣayr, and his camp was at Nahr al-Marʾah. Nuṣayr returned to his camp from al-Ubullah when that reached him, and Zīrak marched by another road, because he estimated that the Zanj would come to the camp of Nuṣayr from that direction, and so it was. He met them on their road, and he prevailed over them, and they fled from him. They had set an ambush, and Zīrak was guided to it, and he penetrated until he came upon it, and he killed a group of the ambushers and captured a group. Among those he captured was the commander of the Zanj, Abū ʿĪsā Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm al-Baṣrī, one of the greatest of their commanders, and he took from them more than thirty sumayriyyāt. All the Zanj were grieved by that, and about two thousand of them sought safe-conduct from Nuṣayr. He wrote of that to al-Muwaffaq, and he ordered him to accept them and to come to him at Nahr al-Mubārak, and he joined him there. Al-Muwaffaq ordered his son Abū al-ʿAbbās to march to fight the ʿAlawī at Nahr Abī al-Khaṣīb, and he marched to him and fought from morning until noon. A commander of the ʿAlawī's commanders sought safe-conduct from him, and with him were a group, and that broke the villain, and Abū al-ʿAbbās returned victorious. Al-Muwaffaq wrote to the ʿAlawī a letter calling him to repentance and turning to God Almighty from what he had committed of shedding blood, violating sanctities, destroying lands, deeming women and property lawful, and claiming prophethood and messengers, and offering him safe-conduct. The letter reached him, and he read it, but he did not write a reply.
