✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm b. Kathīr b. Aflaḥ Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm b. Kathīr b. Aflaḥ, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿAbdī, known as al-Dawraqī, brother of Yaʿqūb. Regarding his being called al-Dawraqī there are two views: one is that he was an ascetic, and whoever practiced asceticism in that time was called Dawraqī; the second is that he used to wear the long hats called dawraqiyya. He heard Aḥmad b. Ismāʿīl b. ʿUlayya, Yazīd b. Zurayʿ, Hushaym, Ibn Mahdī, and many others. Muslim b. al-Ḥajjāj, Ibn Abī al-Dunyā, and others narrated from him. He was trustworthy and truthful. He died at al-ʿAskar in Shaʿbān of this year. Abū Isḥāq al-Shālanjī Ismāʿīl b. Saʿīd, Abū Isḥāq al-Shālanjī. He used to hold the doctrine of the people of opinion, then he abandoned it, and Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal corresponded with him. He died in Dihqān in this year. Abū ʿAmr al-Azdī al-Kūfī, the blind Ḥafṣ b. ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Ṣuhayb, Abū ʿAmr al-Azdī al-Kūfī, the blind. He heard Ismāʿīl b. Jaʿfar, Abū Numayla Yaḥyā b. Wāḍiḥ, and ʿAffān. Abū Bakr b. Abī al-Dunyā narrated from him. Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī said: He is truthful. He died in Shawwāl of this year. Diʿbil al-Khuzāʿī b. ʿAlī b. Tamīm Diʿbil al-Khuzāʿī b. ʿAlī b. Tamīm b. Zayd b. Sulaymān b. Nahshal b. Khidāsh, Abū ʿAlī al-Khuzāʿī; and it is said: Abū Jaʿfar. It is said: his name was ʿAbd al-Raḥmān; and it is said: Muḥammad, and he was nicknamed Diʿbil. Abū ʿUmar al-Shaybānī said: al-diʿbil is an old camel. Abū Zayd al-Anṣārī said: al-diʿbil is a she-camel with her young. It is said: his nurse nicknamed him that because of a jest (duʿāba) in him; she meant dhiʿbal but turned the dhāl into a dāl. He was born in the year 148 AH. He had natural poetry, but he was excessive in satire; hardly anyone was safe from him. He was one of the extreme Shīʿa. He recited his famous poem: Schools of verses (āyāt) devoid of recitation, and a stopping place and an abode with desolate courtyards. He intended with it ʿAlī b. Mūsā al-Riḍā, who gave him ten thousand dirhams of the dirhams struck with his name, and gave him a robe from his clothes. The people of Qumm gave him thirty thousand dirhams for it, and he swore not to sell it. They waylaid him and cut it up. He said to them: It is desired for God Almighty's sake, and it is forbidden to you. They gave him thirty thousand dirhams, and he swore not to sell it unless they gave him a piece of it to be in his shroud, so they gave him, and it was among his shrouds. He wrote this poem: "Schools of verses" on a garment and entered ihram in it, and ordered that it be placed among his shrouds. He spent most of his time in hiding because of his excessive satire. He used to say: I have carried my wood for fifty years; I find no one to crucify me on it. He came to Iraq with the money al-Riḍā gave him, and the Shīʿa bought from him every dirham for ten dirhams, so he ended up with a hundred thousand dirhams. Abū Kaʿb al-Khuzāʿī said: Diʿbil went as a delegate to ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir. When he reached him, he stood before him and said: I came seeking intercession without kinship to you, not with the sanctity of manners. So discharge my claim, for I am a man not insistent upon you in asking. ʿAbd Allāh was moved, entered, and sent him a note with sixty thousand dirhams. In the note were two verses: You hastened us, so the first of our kindness came to you little; had you delayed it, it would not be little. Take the little and be as one who did not accept, and we will be as if we did not act. Abū Jaʿfar Aḥmad b. Yaʿqūb al-Aṣfahānī said: Abū Ṭālib al-Diʿbilī recited to us. He said: ʿAlī b. al-Jahm recited to us—not his own; he kept repeating it and admiring it: When she saw something gleaming at the parting of my hair, she turned away with the turning of one departing with adornment. I remained seeking union with her with self-abasement, while gray hair winked at her: do not do it. Abū Ṭālib said: Among the best things said on this theme is the saying of my grandfather: Do not wonder, O Salmā, at a man whose head gray hair made laugh, so he wept. Where is youth, and which way did it go? No—where is shade sought? Nay, it perished. Do not hold anyone accountable for my wrongs; my eyes and my heart shared in my blood. Diʿbil died at al-Ṭīb in this year. He lived ninety-seven years. Dhū al-Nūn al-Miṣrī b. Ibrāhīm Dhū al-Nūn al-Miṣrī b. Ibrāhīm, Abū al-Fayḍ al-Miṣrī. It is said his name was Thawbān and Dhū al-Nūn is a nickname; and it is said his name was al-Fayḍ. His origin was from Nubia, from a village of the villages of Upper Egypt called Akhmīm. He settled in Egypt. He was a wise man, ascetic, preacher. Al-Mutawakkil sent for him, and he was carried to his presence in Sāmarrāʾ until he saw him and heard his speech. Then he went down to Baghdad and stayed there a while, then went down to Egypt. He traveled much. He transmitted hadith from Mālik, al-Layth b. Saʿd, Sufyān b. ʿUyayna, al-Fuḍayl, and others. Al-Ḥasan b. ʿAlawayh says: I heard Yūsuf b. al-Ḥusayn say: When I became intimate with Dhū al-Nūn al-Miṣrī, I said: O shaykh, what was the beginning of your affair? He said: I was a young man given to amusement and play. Then I repented and left that and went on pilgrimage to the Sacred House of God, with me some merchandise. I boarded a ship with merchants from Egypt, and a handsome young man boarded with us, as if his face shone. When we were in mid-sea, the ship's owner missed a purse containing money. He ordered the ship to be stopped and searched those aboard and their belongings. When they reached the young man to search him, he leaped from the ship and sat on the waves of the sea; the wave rose under him like a couch while we watched from the ship. Then he said: O my Master, these people accused me. I swear, O Beloved of my heart, that You command every beast of this place to put out its head with a jewel in its mouth. Dhū al-Nūn said: No sooner had his words finished than we saw the sea beasts before the ship and around it, each having put out its head, and in each mouth a shining jewel glittering. Then the young man leaped from the wave into the sea and began walking proudly on the surface of the water, saying: You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help, until he disappeared from my sight. This is what impelled me to wandering (siyāḥa). Ḥayyān b. Aḥmad al-Sahmī says: Dhū al-Nūn al-Miṣrī died at al-Jīza, and was carried in a boat until crossed to al-Fusṭāṭ for fear of crowding on the bridge. He was buried in the side of the cemetery of the people of al-Muʿāfir. That was on Monday, two nights remaining of Dhū al-Qaʿda, year 246 AH. His father was called Ibrāhīm, a client of Isḥāq b. Muḥammad al-Anṣārī. He had four sons: Dhū al-Nūn, Dhū al-Kifl, al-Humaysaʿ, and ʿAbd al-Bārī. None of them followed the path of Dhū al-Nūn. It is said: Dhū al-Nūn died in the year 245, and it is said: in the year 248. Sulaymān b. Abī Shaykh Sulaymān b. Abī Shaykh, whose father's name was Manṣūr b. Sulaymān, kunya Abū Ayyūb al-Wāsiṭī. He was born in 151 AH and lived in Baghdad in Birkat Zalzal. He narrated from: Sufyān b. ʿUyayna and ʿAbd Allāh b. Idrīs. He was learned in genealogy, histories, the battle-days of the Arabs, and their reports. He was truthful and trustworthy. Aḥmad b. Abī Khaythama narrated from him. He died in this year at the age of ninety-five. Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Rāzī Shuʿayb b. Sahl b. Kathīr, Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Rāzī, known as Shaʿbūba. He narrated from al-Ṣabbāḥ b. Muḥārib. Al-Muʿtaṣim appointed him judge and assigned him the prayer with the people in the mosque of al-Ruṣāfa on Fridays and festivals, when Aḥmad b. Abī Duʾād was chief judge. Shuʿayb had written on his mosque: The Qurʾān is created. He was dismissed from judgeship in 228 AH and died in this year. Shujāʿ, mother of al-Mutawakkil Shujāʿ, mother of al-Mutawakkil. Ibn ʿArafa said: She was among the foremost of women in generosity and nobility. Aḥmad b. al-Khaṣīb said: Before his vizierate, he said: I was secretary to the lady Shujāʿ, mother of al-Mutawakkil. One day I was sitting in my council in my dīwān when a servant came out to me with a purse and said: O Aḥmad, the lady, mother of the Commander of the Faithful, sends you greetings and says to you: This is a thousand dinars from my lawful wealth; take it and give it to deserving people, and write for me their lineages, names, and dwellings. Whenever anything comes to us from this quarter, we will send it to them. I took the purse and went home. I sent for those I trusted, told them what I was ordered, and asked them to name for me those they knew among the veiled and needy. They named a group, and I distributed three hundred dinars among them. Night came, and the rest of the money was before me. I had left no one deserving, and I thought about Sāmarrāʾ and its outskirts and the self-sufficiency of its people: there was no one deserving in it. An hour of the night passed, with some of my women before me. The lanes were locked, the watch patrolled, and I was thinking about the dinars when I heard the gate of the lane being knocked, and I heard the doorman talking with a man behind it. I said to one of those before me: Find out the news. He returned and said: At the gate is so-and-so, son of so-and-so, the ʿAlawī, asking permission to see you. I said: Tell him to enter. And I said to the women before me: Be behind this curtain, for this man has not come to us at this hour except for a need. When he entered, he greeted and sat, and said to me: A visitor has come to me at this hour, one connected to the Messenger of God ﷺ. By God, we have nothing, nor have we prepared what people prepare. I had no neighbor to whom I could turn but you. He said: I gave him one dinar from the dinars, and he thanked me and left. He said: The mistress of the house came out and said: O you, the lady gives you a thousand dinars to give to the deserving, and you see who is more deserving than the son of the daughter of the Messenger of God ﷺ, with what he complained to you? I said to her: What is the way? She said: Give him the purse. I said: Boy, call him back. He came back, and I told him the story and gave him the purse. He took it, thanked me, and left. When he turned away from me, Iblīs came to me and said: Al-Mutawakkil and his aversion to the People of the House; he gave you a thousand dinars to give to the deserving and to write their names, lineages, and dwellings. With what will you justify to him, since you gave an ʿAlawī seven hundred dinars? I said to the mistress of the house: You have landed me in what I hate: either seven hundred dinars, or loss of favor. I told her what occurred to my mind. She said: Rely on their grandfather. I said: Leave this aside. She said: Rely on their grandfather. She kept repeating this until I fell silent. I went to my bed. Scarcely had I fallen asleep when a voice at the door. I said to someone near me: Who is at the door? He went and returned and said: A messenger from the lady commands you to ride to her this hour. I went out into the courtyard; the night was as it was, and the stars. A second came, and a third. I let them in and said: At night?! They said: It must be. I rode, and I had not reached al-Jawsaq but I was in a procession of messengers. I entered the house, and a servant took my hand and led me to the place I used to reach. He made me stand, and a special servant came out, took my hand, and said: O Aḥmad, you will speak with the lady, mother of the Commander of the Faithful. Stand where you are made to stand and do not speak until you are asked. He led me into a graceful house with rooms over which curtains hung, and a candle in the middle. He made me stand at one of the doors, and I stood without speaking. A crier called to me: O Aḥmad! I said: At your service, O mother of the Commander of the Faithful. She said: The account of a thousand dinars—rather the account of seven hundred dinars—and she wept. I said to myself: The calamity of the ʿAlawī; he took the money and went, opened the shops of the merchants and others, bought his needs, and talked, and the reporters wrote about it. Al-Mutawakkil has ordered my death, and she weeps out of mercy for me. Then she fell silent, then repeated: O Aḥmad, the account of a thousand dinars—rather the account of seven hundred dinars—then wept. She did that three times, then fell silent and asked me about the account. I told her the truth. When she reached the mention of the ʿAlawī, she wept and said: O Aḥmad, may God reward you well, and reward those in your house well. Do you know what happened to me tonight? I said: No. She said: I was sleeping in my bed and saw the Prophet ﷺ saying to me: May God reward you well, and reward Aḥmad b. al-Khaṣīb well, and reward those in his house well, for you have relieved three of my descendants this night; they had nothing. Take this jewelry with these clothes, and take these dinars and give them to the ʿAlawī, and say to him: We will send you everything that comes to us from this quarter. Take this jewelry and these clothes and this money and give them to your wife, and say: O blessed one, may God reward you well, for this is your brokerage fee. And this, take it yourself, O Aḥmad. She gave me money and clothes and came out. It was carried before me, and I rode back to my house. My way passed by the ʿAlawī's door. I said: I will begin with him, since God Almighty provided us this through his hands. I knocked on the door. Someone said: Who is this? I said: Aḥmad b. al-Khaṣīb. He came out to me and said: O Aḥmad, bring what you have. I said: May my father and mother be your ransom. And what tells you what I have? He said to me: 'I returned from your place with what I took from you, and we had nothing at all. So I went back to my cousin's daughter and told her, and handed over the money to her. She rejoiced and said: "I do not want you to buy anything for us, nor will I eat anything myself. But rise and pray, and supplicate while I say ameen to your supplication." So I rose and prayed and supplicated, and she said ameen to my supplication. I laid down my head and slept, and I saw my grandfather ﷺ in a dream, saying to me: "I have thanked them for what they did for you, and they shall bless you with something else, so accept it."' He said: So I gave him what was with me and returned to my house, where I found the lady of the house anxious, standing in prayer and supplicating. She realized that I had come back safe, so she came out to me and asked about my news. I related to her the whole story exactly as it happened. She said: 'Did I not tell you: rely on their grandfather? So how did you see what he did?' I then handed over to her what belonged to her, and she took it. [The compiler said: We have already mentioned in the year thirty-six that the mother of al-Mutawakkil performed the Hajj and al-Mutawakkil escorted her to al-Najaf, and she distributed a great deal of money. She was a woman of abundant generosity, intensely eager to do good]. Shujāʿ died at al-Jaʿfariyyah on the sixth night remaining of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. Al-Muntaṣir prayed over her, and she was buried near the congregational mosque. She left behind in cash five million and fifty thousand dinars, and in jewels whose value was one million dinars. From Jaʿfar b. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid al-Hāshimī, who said: I entered upon al-Mutawakkil when his mother died and offered him condolences. He said: 'O Jaʿfar, sometimes I compose a single verse and when I go beyond it I become confused, and I have said [a verse]: I remembered when time separated us, / so I consoled myself with the Prophet Muhammad.' And someone present in the gathering completed it. And I said to her: 'Verily, deaths are our path, / for he who does not die on his day will die tomorrow.' Abū al-Faḍl al-ʿAnbarī Al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-ʿAẓīm b. Ismāʿīl b. Kaysān, Abū al-Faḍl al-ʿAnbarī. From the people of Basra. He heard Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān, and Ibn Mahdī, and sat with Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal. Muslim and Abū Dāwūd narrated from him, and he was trustworthy and reliable. Muḥammad b. Ḥātim b. Sulaymān He died in this year. Muḥammad b. Ḥātim b. Sulaymān, Abū Jaʿfar, and it is said: Abū ʿAbd Allāh, al-Zammī. He heard Hushaym b. Bashīr, Jarīr b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd, and others. Abū Ḥātim, Abū ʿĪsā al-Tirmidhī, and others narrated from him, and al-Dāraquṭnī declared him trustworthy. Abū Jaʿfar al-Asadī, known as Luwayn Muḥammad b. Sulaymān b. Ḥabīb b. Jubayr, Abū Jaʿfar al-Asadī, known as Luwayn. He heard Mālik b. Anas, Ḥammād b. Zayd, Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, and others. Narrated from him: ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad, al-Bāghandī, al-Baghawī, and many others. The last of the Baghdadi scholars to narrate from him was Ibn Ṣāʿid. Regarding the reason for his nickname Luwayn, there are two opinions: One: that it was a nickname given to him by his mother, as stated by Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim al-Azdī. The second: that he used to sell beasts and would say: 'This horse has a luwayn (a small brand or mark),' so he was nicknamed Luwayn. Ibn Jarīr said: Luwayn is among the trustworthy according to the ḥadīth scholars, except that Imām Aḥmad criticized him for raising a tradition that was mawqūf (stopped), and perhaps that was due to poor memory, and it is not thought that he intended it. He lived one hundred and thirteen years. He died in Adana and was carried to al-Maṣṣīṣah and buried there in this year, and it is said: in the year forty-five. Abū Yūsuf al-Miṣrī Yaʿqūb b. Ismāʿīl b. Ḥammād b. Zayd b. Dirham, Abū Yūsuf al-Miṣrī, client of Jarīr b. Ḥāzim al-Azdī. He held the office of judge in the city of the Prophet ﷺ, and came to Baghdad and narrated there from Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, Yaḥyā b. Saʿīd al-Qaṭṭān, and Ibn Mahdī. Abū Bakr b. Abī al-Dunyā and ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad narrated from him. Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī said: He is truthful (ṣadūq). He died in the land of Fārs while he was serving as its judge in this year. In it also died al-Sarī b. Muʿādh al-Shaybānī in al-Rayy, and he was its governor, of good conduct, one of the people of virtue. Among the notables who died in it: Al-Ḥusayn b. al-Ḥasan al-Marwazī. And Abū ʿUmar al-Dūrī, one of the famous Quran reciters. And Muḥammad b. Muṣaffā al-Ḥimṣī. Aḥmad b. Abī al-Ḥawārī. His name was ʿAbd Allāh b. Maymūn b. ʿAbbās b. al-Ḥārith Abū al-Ḥasan al-Taghlibī al-Ghaṭafānī, one of the famous ascetics, the renowned worshippers, and the praised righteous ones possessing virtuous states and true charismata. His origin was from Kufa, and he resided in Damascus and studied under Shaykh Abū Sulaymān al-Dārānī, may Allah have mercy on them both. He narrated ḥadīth from Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, Wakīʿ, Abū Usāmah, and many others. From him narrated Abū Dāwūd, Ibn Mājah, Abū Ḥātim, Abū Zurʿah al-Dimashqī, Abū Zurʿah al-Rāzī, and many others. Abū Ḥātim mentioned him and praised him. Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn said: 'I think that Allah gives drink to the people of Syria through him.' Al-Junayd b. Muḥammad used to say: 'He is the sweet basil of Syria.' Al-Ḥāfiẓ Ibn ʿAsākir related that he had made a pact with Abū Sulaymān al-Dārānī that he would not anger him or oppose him. One day he came to him while he was speaking to the people and said: 'O my master, they have heated the oven, so what do you command?' Abū Sulaymān did not answer him because he was busy with the people. Then Aḥmad repeated it a second and a third time, and on the third time he said to him: 'Go and sit in it.' Then Abū Sulaymān became occupied with talking to the people. Afterwards he came to his senses and said to those present: 'I told Aḥmad: "Go sit in the oven," and I fear that he may have done that. Come with me to him.' They went and found him sitting in the oven, and not a single hair of him was burned. It is also related that Aḥmad b. Abī al-Ḥawārī one morning had a child born to him and possessed nothing with which to attend to the child. He said to his servant: 'Go and borrow for us a waznah (a measure) of flour.' While he was in that state, a man came to him with two hundred dirhams and placed them before him. Then another man entered upon him at that very hour and said: 'O Aḥmad, a child was born to me last night and I possess nothing.' Aḥmad raised his eyes to the sky and said: 'O my Master, so quickly!' And he said to the man: 'Take these dirhams, they are yours,' and he did not take a single dirham from them, and he borrowed flour for his family. His servant related from him that he went out to the frontier for ribāṭ (garrison duty), and gifts kept coming to him from early morning until noon, then he distributed all of them by sunset. Then he said to me: 'Be like this: do not reject anything from Allah, and do not store up anything from Him.' When the miḥnah (inquisition) in the time of al-Maʾmūn concerning the creation of the Quran came to Damascus, Aḥmad b. Abī al-Ḥawārī, Hishām b. ʿAmmār, Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Dhakwān were appointed to it. All of them complied except Aḥmad b. Abī al-Ḥawārī. He was imprisoned in Dār al-Ḥijārah, then he was threatened, and he complied with a mental reservation (tawriyah) under duress, and then he was released, may Allah have mercy on him. He once stood at the frontier for a night repeating this verse: 'You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help' [al-Fātiḥah: 5], until morning. And he had thrown his books into the sea and said: 'What an excellent guide you were for me to Allah and to Him, but occupying oneself with the guide after knowing the One indicated and reaching Him is impossible.' Among his sayings: 'There is no guide to Allah other than He, and knowledge is sought only for the manners of service.' He said: 'Whoever knows this world renounces it, whoever knows the Hereafter desires it, and whoever knows Allah prefers His good pleasure.' He said: 'Whoever looks at this world with the look of desire and love for it, Allah removes the light of certainty and asceticism from his heart.' He said: 'I said to Abū Sulaymān al-Dārānī at the beginning of my affair: "Advise me." He said: "Are you one who seeks advice?" I said: "Yes, if Allah, exalted is He, wills." He said: "Oppose your soul in every desire it has, for it is the one that commands evil. Beware of despising anyone among the Muslims. Make obedience to Allah your outer garment, fear of Him your inner garment, sincerity your provision, and truthfulness your shield. Accept from me this single word and do not part with it or neglect it: whoever is shy before Allah in all his times, states, and actions, He will bring him to the station of the friends (awliyāʾ) among His servants." He said: So I placed these words before me, and at every moment I remember them and hold my soul accountable to them. The correct view is that he died in this year, and it is said: in the year two hundred and thirty. And other than that is said, and Allah knows best.
