وَوَلَّى عَلِيَّ بْنَ هِشَامٍ مُحَارَبَةَ الْخَرَّمِيَّةِ، وَنَدَبَ عِيسَى بْنَ يَزِيدَ الْجُلُودِيَّ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ إِلَى مُحَارَبَةِ الزُّطِّ، وَهُمْ أَوَّلُ مَنْ سَكَنَ الْبَطَائِحَ ، وَالْبَطَائِحُ هِيَ مَغِيضُ دِجْلَةَ وَالْفُرَاتِ، وَهُمَا نَهْرَا الْعِرَاقِ، وَكَانَ الزُّطُّ سَبْعَةً وَعِشْرِينَ أَلْفًا وَمِائَتَيْنِ، مِنْهُمُ الْمُقَاتِلَةُ اثْنَا عَشَرَ أَلْفًا فَلَمَّا اسْتَوْطَنُوا الْبَطَائِحَ قَطَعُوا الطَّرِيقَ وَمَنَعُوا الْمُجْتَازِينَ مَا بَيْنَ الْبَصْرَةِ وَوَاسِطَ، فَاسْتَغَاثَ النَّاسُ إِلَى الْمَأْمُونِ، فَنَدَبَ إِلَيْهِمْ عِيسَى بْنَ يَزِيدَ، فَجَرَتْ بَيْنَهُمْ وَبَيْنَهُ وَقَائِعُ، وَلَمْ يَظْفَرْ مِنْهُمْ بِطَائِلٍ، فَاسْتَظْهَرُوا عَلَيْهِ، وَعَادُوا إِلَى مَا كَانُوا عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْفَسَادِ، وَقَطْعِ الطَّرِيقِ، فَنَدَبَ الْمَأْمُونُ غَيْرَهُ، فَلَمْ يَظْفَرْ مِنْهُمْ بِشَيْءٍ.
Translation
✧ He appointed ʿAlī b. Hishām to fight the Khurramiyyah, and in this year he delegated ʿĪsā b. Yazīd al-Julūdī to fight the Zuṭṭ, who were the first to settle the Baṭāʾiḥ. The Baṭāʾiḥ are the marshland where the Tigris and Euphrates, the two rivers of Iraq, drain. The Zuṭṭ numbered twenty-seven thousand two hundred, of whom the fighting men were twelve thousand. When they settled the Baṭāʾiḥ, they cut the road and prevented passersby between al-Baṣrah and Wāsiṭ. The people appealed to al-Maʾmūn for help, so he delegated ʿĪsā b. Yazīd against them. Engagements took place between them and him, but he gained nothing of consequence from them. They prevailed over him and returned to their former state of corruption and highway robbery. Al-Maʾmūn delegated another, but he gained nothing from them.
