✧ Mention of al-Maʾmūn's consummation of marriage with Būrān In this year, al-Maʾmūn consummated his marriage with Būrān bt. al-Ḥasan b. Sahl in Ramaḍān. Al-Maʾmūn had travelled from Baghdād to Fam al-Ṣilḥ to the encampment of al-Ḥasan b. Sahl and alighted there. Būrān was escorted to him, and when al-Maʾmūn entered to her, there were with her Ḥamdūnah bt. al-Rashīd, Umm Jaʿfar Zubaydah, mother of al-Amīn, her grandmother Umm al-Faḍl, and al-Ḥasan b. Sahl. When he entered, her grandmother scattered over him a thousand pearls of the most precious kind there could be. Al-Maʾmūn ordered them to be gathered, and they were gathered. He gave them to Būrān and said, "Ask for your needs." She remained silent. Her grandmother said, "Ask your lord, for he has commanded you." She asked him for pardon for Ibrāhīm b. al-Mahdī, and he said, "I have done so." She asked him for permission for Umm Jaʿfar to perform the pilgrimage, and he granted it to her. Umm Jaʿfar clothed her with the pearl-studded Umayyad robe. He consummated the marriage with her that night, and on that night a candle of ambergris containing forty mann was lit. Al-Maʾmūn stayed with al-Ḥasan for seventeen days. Every day he prepared for him and for all those with him what they needed. Al-Ḥasan bestowed robes of honour upon the commanders according to their ranks, mounted them, and gave them gifts. The total amount that he incurred was fifty million dirhams. Al-Ḥasan wrote the names of his estates on scraps of paper and scattered them over the commanders. Whoever received a scrap containing the name of an estate was sent to it and took possession of it.
