✧ An account of the prominent figures who died in this year. 1108 - Aḥmad b. Abī Ṭaybah b. ʿĪsā b. Sulaymān b. Dīnār al-Dārimī. He narrated from Mālik b. Anas. Al-Maʾmūn appointed him judge of Jurjān, then appointed him judge of Qūmis, where he remained judging until he died in this year. 1109 - Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī [Abū ʿAbd Allāh] al-Juʿfī: He was a learned and devout man. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said: I have not seen in Kūfah anyone better than Ḥusayn al-Juʿfī; he was likened to monks. From Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd al-Raḥbī, who said: I heard Abū Bakr b. Samāʿah say: We were with Ibn Abī ʿUmar al-ʿAdanī in Makkah, and we heard him say: Hārūn came to us once to this mosque, and the servant who was with him told me: I was with him, and Jaʿfar b. Yaḥyā was with him, and we all went out until we reached the mountain pass. He said to me: Ask about Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī al-Juʿfī. I met a man and said to him: Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī al-Juʿfī? He said: There he is, coming toward you riding a donkey, with a black man behind him leading his loads. Then he appeared. I said: There he is, O Commander of the Faithful. When he came alongside him, he stood up to him and kissed his hand—or he said his foot. Jaʿfar said to him: Do you know who is greeting you, O shaykh? He is the Commander of the Faithful [Hārūn]. Ḥusayn turned to him and said: You, O handsome-faced one, are responsible for all these creatures. He sat down weeping. Then someone came to us while we were with Ibn ʿUyaynah and said to Sufyān: Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī al-Juʿfī has arrived. He rose to meet him, and we went out with him. When he was on the road to the gate of Banū Shaybah, Fuḍayl b. ʿIyāḍ met him and said to him: Where are you going, O Abū Muḥammad? He said: Ḥusayn al-Juʿfī has arrived, and I wanted to meet him. He said: I am with you. So the two went out walking together while we were behind them. When we reached the pearl merchants, there was Ḥusayn riding a donkey. Fuḍayl went forward to him and kissed his foot, and Sufyān went forward and kissed his hand—or Sufyān kissed his foot and Fuḍayl his hand. Fuḍayl said to him: May my father be a ransom for a man at whose hands I learned the Qurʾān, or through whom God taught me the Qurʾān. Then he entered the mosque and circumambulated the Kaʿbah, and came to the red pillar and sat beside it, and people crowded around him. Al-Juʿfī died in this year. 1110 - Al-Ḥusayn b. al-Walīd, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Qurashī al-Naysābūrī. He heard Ibn Jurayj, Ibn Abī Dhiʾb, Mālik b. Anas, Ibn Lahīʿah, al-Thawrī, and the two Ḥammāds. Those who narrated from him: Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Ibn Rāhwayh, and Yaḥyā b. Yaḥyā. He was trustworthy, a jurist, and a reciter of the Qurʾān; he recited according to al-Kisāʾī. He used to raid the Turks every three years and perform the pilgrimage every five years. He had wealth and was generous, and he used to say: Whoever dines with me has honored me. He died in this year, though some said in the year before it. 1111 - Khuzaymah b. Khāzim al-Nahshalī, the commander. He had precedence and standing with the caliphs, and the quarter of Khuzaymah in Baghdad is named after him. He transmitted ḥadīth from Ibn Abī Dhiʾb. He died in Shaʿbān of this year after he had gone blind. 1112 - Zayd b. al-Ḥubāb b. al-Rayyān, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Taymī al-ʿUklī [al-Kūfī]. He heard Mālik b. Mighwal, Sufyān al-Thawrī, Shuʿbah, Mālik b. Anas, and Ibn Abī Dhiʾb. Those who narrated from him: Yazīd b. Hārūn and Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal. The latter said of him: He was a man of ḥadīth, astute, and truthful. He traveled to Egypt and Khurāsān in pursuit of ḥadīth, and how patient he was with poverty. He died in this year. 1113 - ʿAmr b. Shuʿayb, Abū Dāwūd al-Jafrī—and Jafr is a place. Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal said: I saw Abū Dāwūd al-Jafrī wearing a patched cloak from which the cotton was coming out, praying between maghrib and ʿishāʾ, swaying from hunger. It has reached me from ʿAbbās al-Dūrī that he said: If you had seen Abū Dāwūd, you would have seen a man who seemed to have been shown the Fire and seen what is in it. Abū Dāwūd transmitted from al-Thawrī and others. He died in this year. 1114 - ʿAlī b. Mūsā b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib—peace be upon them—Abū al-Ḥasan al-Riḍā. He heard his father, his paternal uncles, and others. He used to give legal opinions in the mosque of the Messenger of God ﷺ when he was some twenty-odd years old. Al-Maʾmūn had ordered that he be brought from Madinah. When he arrived in Naysābūr, he was in his litter on a gray mule, and the scholars of the city went out to meet him, such as Yaḥyā b. Yaḥyā, Isḥāq b. Rāhwayh, Muḥammad b. Rāfiʿ, Aḥmad b. Ḥarb, and others. He stayed there for a time, while al-Maʾmūn was in Marw, until he ordered that he be brought to him. He made him his heir apparent, as was previously mentioned. When they saw that the caliphate had passed to the descendants of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib ؓ, they poisoned ʿAlī b. Mūsā. He died at Ṭūs, in a village called Sanābādh, in Ramaḍān of this year. Al-Ṣūlī said: Abū Nuwās praised him and said: It was said to me: You are the one man among all people in every improvised speech. You have a wonderful gift in the essence of speech, Which yields pearls in the hand of him who gathers them. On whom have you left off praising Ibn Mūsā, And the qualities that have gathered in him? I said: I cannot find the way to praise an imam Whose father Jibrīl served. 1115 - Muḥammad b. Bakr, Abū ʿUthmān—though some said Abū ʿAbd Allāh—al-Baṣrī al-Bursānī, and Bursān is a branch of al-Azd. He heard Ibn Jurayj, Saʿīd b. Abī ʿArūbah, and Shuʿbah. He came to Baghdad and narrated there. Those who narrated from him: Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn, and others. Yaḥyā said: He was trustworthy and witty. He died in al-Baṣrah in Dhū al-Ḥijjah of this year, though some said in the year four. 1116 - Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib, Abū Jaʿfar, known as al-Dībāj; he was given this nickname because of the beauty of his face. He was the brother of Isḥāq, Mūsā, and ʿAlī b. Jaʿfar. He narrated from his father, and a group narrated from him. Muḥammad had risen in Makkah during the days of al-Maʾmūn and called for allegiance to himself. The people of the Ḥijāz and Tihāmah pledged allegiance to him as caliph on Friday, three days into Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, in the year two hundred. He continued to be addressed as caliph from the time he was pledged allegiance until Tuesday, the fifth of Jumādā al-Ūlā. Then al-Muʿtaṣim led the people in the pilgrimage and sent someone to fight him, seized him, and brought him to Baghdad in his company, while al-Maʾmūn was at that time in Khurāsān. He sent him to him, and he pardoned him. He did not remain long before he died in his presence. It was said that he had intercourse, was cupped, and entered the bathhouse in a single day, and that was the cause of his death. From Abū al-Ḥasan b. Muḥammad b. Yaḥyā b. al-Ḥasan al-ʿAlawī, who said: My grandfather told us: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar was brave, intelligent, and virtuous. He used to fast one day and break his fast the next. His wife Khadījah bt. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥusayn used to say: He never went out from us in a garment and returned without giving it away. Abū Muḥammad said: My grandfather told us: Dāwūd b. al-Mubārak said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar died in Khurāsān while with al-Maʾmūn. Al-Maʾmūn rode to attend his funeral until he entered the grave with him and remained in it until it was built up over him. Then he came out and stood at the grave, and ʿAbd Allāh prayed for him and said: O Commander of the Faithful, you have tired yourself; perhaps you should ride. Al-Maʾmūn said to him: This is a kinship bond that was severed two hundred years ago. 1117 - Muṣʿab b. al-Miqdām, Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Khathʿamī al-Kūfī. He heard Misʿar and Sufyān al-Thawrī. Those who narrated from him: Abū Kurayb and Ibn Rāhwayh. He was trustworthy [and truthful]. He died in this year. 1118 - Al-Naḍr b. Shumayl, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Māzinī al-Marwazī. He settled in Marw and heard from Ibn ʿAwn, ʿAwf, Shuʿbah, and others. He was a transmitter of poetry and had knowledge of grammar, lexicography, and the battle-days of the Arabs. He died in Khurāsān [in this year]. From al-Zubayr b. Bakkār, who said: Al-Naḍr b. Shumayl told me: I entered upon al-Maʾmūn in Marw wearing worn and tattered clothes. He said to me: O Naḍr, you enter upon the Commander of the Faithful in such clothes? I said: O Commander of the Faithful, the heat of Marw cannot be repelled except with such old garments. He said: No, but you are an ascetic, so you will match us in conversation. Al-Maʾmūn said: Hushaym b. Bashīr told me, from Mujālid, from al-Shaʿbī, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said, “When a man marries a woman for her religion and her beauty, that is a rectitude against want.” [I said: Your mouth has spoken truth about Hushaym, O Commander of the Faithful. ʿAwf al-Aʿrābī told me from al-Ḥasan that the Prophet ﷺ said: “When a man marries a woman for her religion and her beauty, in that is a rectitude against want.” Al-Maʾmūn had been reclining.] Then al-Maʾmūn sat up straight and said: Al-sidād is a solecism, O Naḍr. I said: Yes, here, and Hushaym was the one who committed the solecism, for he was prone to solecisms. He said: What is the difference between them? I said: Al-sadād is the right course in religion and the way, while al-sidād is what suffices, and whatever you use to stop up something is sidād. He said: Do the Arabs know that? I said: Yes, this al-ʿArjī, one of the descendants of ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān, says: They wasted me—and what a young man they wasted—for a day of battle and the stopping of a gap. He said: Al-Maʾmūn bowed his head for a while, then said: May God disfigure whoever has no refinement. Then he said: Recite to me, O Naḍr, the most captivating verse of the Arabs. I said: The words of Ibn Bayḍ, O Commander of the Faithful, about al-Ḥakam b. Marwān: She says to me while eyes are sleeping: Stay with us a day, but I did not stay. “Which faces have you sought?” I said to her: “To any face except to al-Ḥakam?” Whenever the two doorkeepers of his pavilion say: This is Ibn Bayḍ at the gate, he smiles. I had already surrendered to you with my whole being, so now that it has come to pass, give me my peace. Al-Maʾmūn said: May God reward you well! It is as if you had split open my heart. Recite to me the fairest verse the Arabs have spoken. I said: The words of Ibn Abī ʿArūbah [al-Madīnī]: Truly I, even though my cousin be absent, will press from behind him and before him, And I will aid him with my support, even if he be a man who has withdrawn in his land and his sky. I will guard his secret and protect it until the time comes for me to render it. When calamities afflict his herds, I bring their sound ones near to his noble ones. When he calls my name to mount a difficult mount, I sit upon its back for him. When he approaches from his direction along his road, I do not look out from behind his tent. When he puts on a beautiful garment, I do not say: Would that I had the excellence of his cloak. He said: You have done well, O Naḍr. Now recite to me the most contented verse of the Arabs. So I recited to him the words of Ibn ʿAbdal: I am a man who has never ceased—and that is from God—to be refined, knowing refinement. I stay in the abode as long as the abode is settled for me, even if I am far away and longing. I do not presume upon the friendship of a friend, nor do I benefit myself in anything when it is gone. I seek what the noble seek of provision for myself, and I make my seeking seemly. I milk the abundant she-camel, and I do not exhaust the udders of others in milking. I have seen that the noble youth, when you make him desire his good deed, desires it, While the slave does not seek the open desert nor gives you anything except when he fears, Like the donkey that does evil and cannot walk well except when it is beaten. I have found no bond between creatures except religion, when I chose, and noble lineage. The one who stays put and dwells may be given provision, though he has not bound a saddle or girth to camels, While the owner of a mount and saddle, and the one who is ever a traveler, may be denied provision. He said: You have done well, O Naḍr, as you wished. Do you have the opposite of this? I said: Yes, something better than it. He said: Recite. So I recited to him: The hand of kindness is a cloud wherever it is; a thankless or a thankful man carries it. He said: You have done well, O Naḍr. Then he wrote something I did not know what it was, and said: How do you say the comparative of turāb? I said: Atrab. He said: And ṭīn? I said: Aṭyan. He said: And what about kitāb? I said: Mutrib and muṭayyan. He said: These are better than the first. And he ordered for me fifty thousand dirhams. Then he ordered the servant to take it to al-Faḍl b. Sahl, and I went with him. [When he read the letter,] he said: You have caused the Commander of the Faithful to commit a solecism, O Naḍr. I said: Not at all, but Hushaym’s solecism was his. Then he ordered for me thirty thousand dirhams. So I went out to my house with eighty thousand dirhams.
