ثُمَّ دَخَلَتْ سَنَةُ ثَلَاثٍ وَمِائَتَيْنِ ذِكْرُ مَوْتِ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُوسَى الرِّضَى فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ مَاتَ عَلِيُّ بْنُ مُوسَى الرِّضَى - عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ - وَكَانَ سَبَبَ مَوْتِهِ أَنَّهُ أَكَلَ عِنَبًا فَأَكْثَرَ مِنْهُ، فَمَاتَ فَجْأَةً، وَذَلِكَ فِي آخِرِ صَفَرٍ، وَكَانَ مَوْتُهُ بِمَدِينَةِ طُوسَ، فَصَلَّى الْمَأْمُونُ عَلَيْهِ، وَدَفَنَهُ عِنْدَ قَبْرِ أَبِيهِ الرَّشِيدِ. وَكَانَ الْمَأْمُونُ لَمَّا قَدِمَهَا قَدْ أَقَامَ عِنْدَ قَبْرِ أَبِيهِ. وَقِيلَ: إِنَّ الْمَأْمُونَ سَمَّهُ فِي عِنَبٍ، وَكَانَ عَلِيٌّ يُحِبُّ الْعِنَبَ، وَهَذَا عِنْدِي بَعِيدٌ. فَلَمَّا تُوُفِّيَ كَتَبَ الْمَأْمُونُ إِلَى الْحَسَنِ بْنِ سَهْلٍ يُعْلِمُهُ مَوْتَ عَلِيٍّ، وَمَا دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ مِنَ الْمُصِيبَةِ بِمَوْتِهِ، وَكَتَبَ إِلَى أَهْلِ بَغْدَاذَ وَبَنِي الْعَبَّاسِ وَالْمَوَالِي يُعْلِمُهُمْ مَوْتَهُ، وَأَنَّهُمْ إِنَّمَا نَقَمُوا بِبَيْعَتِهِ، ( وَقَدْ مَاتَ )، وَيَسْأَلُهُمُ الدُّخُولَ فِي طَاعَتِهِ، فَكَتَبُوا إِلَيْهِ أَغْلَظَ جَوَابٍ. ( وَكَانَ مَوْلِدُ عَلِيِّ بْنِ مُوسَى بِالْمَدِينَةِ سَنَةَ ثَمَانٍ وَأَرْبَعِينَ وَمِائَةٍ ).
Translation
✧ Then the year two hundred and three began. Mention of the death of ʿAlī b. Mūsā al-Riḍā In this year ʿAlī b. Mūsā al-Riḍā ﷺ died. The cause of his death was that he ate grapes and ate too many of them, and died suddenly. That was at the end of Ṣafar. His death was in the city of Ṭūs. Al-Maʾmūn prayed over him and buried him next to the grave of his father al-Rashīd. When al-Maʾmūn had arrived there, he had stayed by the grave of his father. It is said that al-Maʾmūn poisoned him in grapes, for ʿAlī loved grapes. But in my view this is far-fetched. When he died, al-Maʾmūn wrote to al-Ḥasan b. Sahl informing him of the death of ʿAlī and of the calamity that had befallen him by his death. He also wrote to the people of Baghdād, the Banū al-ʿAbbās, and the clients, informing them of his death and that they had only objected to his oath of allegiance, and that he had died, and asking them to enter into obedience to him. They wrote back to him a very harsh reply. (ʿAlī b. Mūsā was born in al-Madīnah in the year one hundred and forty-eight.)
