The story of ʿĪsā b. Maryam (peace be upon him)

Maryam met Iblīs, and he said: “Do you not know that nothing will afflict you except what has been decreed for you?” Iblīs said: “Climb to the top of this mountain and throw yourself down from it, then see whether you live or not.” Ibn Ṭāwūs said, from his father: ʿĪsā said: “Do you not know that Allah said: ‘My servant shall not put Me to the test, for I do whatever I will.’” Al-Zuhrī said: “A servant does not test his Lord, but Allah tests His servant.” And from Ṭāwūs, who said: Satan came to ʿĪsā b. Maryam and said: “Do you not claim that you are truthful? Then go to this place and throw yourself down.” He said: “Woe to you! Did He not say: ‘O son of Ādam, do not ask Me for your own destruction, for I do whatever I will.’” And from Khālid b. Yazīd, who said: Satan worshipped alongside ʿĪsā for ten years or two years. One day he stood at the edge of a mountain, and Satan said: “What do you think—if I throw myself down, will anything befall me except what has been decreed for me?” He said: “I am not one who would test my Lord, but my Lord, when He wills, tests me.” And he recognized that he was Satan, so he parted from him. And from Abū ʿUthmān, who said: ʿĪsā ﷺ was praying on the top of a mountain, and Iblīs came to him and said: “Are you the one who claims that everything is by decree and predestination?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “Throw yourself from this mountain and say: ‘It was decreed upon me.’” He said: “O accursed one, Allah tests the servants, and the servants do not test Allah, mighty and majestic is He.” He also said: And from Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah, who said: Iblīs met ʿĪsā b. Maryam, and Iblīs said to him: “O ʿĪsā b. Maryam, are you the one whose lordship has reached such greatness that you spoke in the cradle as an infant, and no one before you spoke in it?” He said: “Rather, lordship belongs to the God who made me speak, then will cause me to die, then will bring me to life.” He said: “Are you the one whose lordship has reached such greatness that you bring the dead to life?” He said: “Rather, lordship belongs to Allah who gives life and causes death; whoever I brought to life, then He will bring him to life.” He said: “By Allah, you are a god in the heaven and a god on the earth.” He said: Then Jibrīl struck him a blow with his wing, and he did not stop until the horns of the sun, then he struck him another blow with his wing, and he did not stop until the hot spring, then he struck him another blow and cast him into the seas of the seventh earth and sank him—in another narration: and made him enter—into them until he tasted the mud, then he came out of it saying: “No one has met from anyone what I have met from you, O son of Maryam.” . And from Abū Salamah Suwayd, from some of his companions, who said: ʿĪsā prayed at the Sacred House (Bayt al-Maqdis) and departed. When he was at part of the mountain pass, Iblīs appeared to him and detained him. He began to present things to him and speak to him, saying: “It is not fitting for you to be a servant.” He kept at him, and ʿĪsā was eager to be rid of him, but he could not get free of him. Among what he said to him was: “It is not fitting for you, O ʿĪsā, to be a servant.” He said: So ʿĪsā sought help from his Lord, and Jibrīl and Mīkāʾīl came. When Iblīs saw the two of them, he desisted. When they settled with him on the mountain pass, they flanked ʿĪsā, and Jibrīl struck Iblīs with his wing and hurled him into the bottom of the valley. He said: Then Iblīs returned to him, and he knew that the two had not been commanded other than that, so he said to ʿĪsā: “I told you that it is not fitting for you to be a servant. Your anger is not the anger of a servant, and you have seen what I met from you when you became angry. But I call you to something that is yours: I shall command the devils and they will obey you, and when humans see that the devils obey you, they will worship you. Indeed, I am not saying that you should be a god with no god besides him, but Allah will be a god in the heaven, and you will be a god on the earth.” When ʿĪsā heard that from him, he sought help from his Lord and cried out with a loud cry, and behold, Isrāfīl had descended. Jibrīl and Mīkāʾīl looked at him, and Iblīs desisted. When he settled with them, Isrāfīl struck Iblīs with his wing and knocked him into the eye of the sun, then struck him another blow, and Iblīs came falling down. He passed by ʿĪsā while he was in his place and said: “O ʿĪsā, I have met from you today severe toil.” Then he hurled him into the eye of the sun, and he found seven angels at the hot spring. He said: They plunged him in, and every time he came out, they plunged him back into that mud. He said: By Allah, he never returned to him after that. He said: And from Abū Ḥudhayfah, who said: His devils gathered to him and said: “Our master, you have met toil.” He said: “This is a protected servant; I have no way against him. But I will lead many humans astray through him, and I will spread among them divergent whims, and I will make them factions, and they will make him and his mother two gods besides Allah.” He said: And Allah sent down, regarding how He supported ʿĪsā and protected him from Iblīs, a speaking Qurʾān that mentions His favor upon ʿĪsā, and He said: “O ʿĪsā b. Maryam, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother when I supported you with the Holy Spirit”—meaning: when I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit 72, meaning Jibrīl—“you spoke to people in the cradle and in maturity, and when I taught you the Book”—meaning the Injīl and the Torah—“and wisdom, and when I restrained the Children of Israel from you” [al-Māʾidah: 110]. “And when I made the poor your close companions and companions and helpers whom you are pleased with, and companions and helpers who are pleased with you as a guide and leader to Paradise. That—know then—is two great traits; whoever meets Me with them has met Me with the purest and most pleasing of creatures to Me. And the Children of Israel will say to you: ‘We fasted, but our fasting was not accepted; we prayed, but our prayer was not accepted; we gave charity, but our charities were not accepted; and we wept with the wailing of camels, but our weeping was not shown mercy.’ So say to them: ‘Why is that? And what prevents Me? Is it that My hand’s wealth has become little? Are not the treasures of the heavens and the earth in My hand, and I spend from them as I will? Or does stinginess afflict Me? Am I not the most generous of those asked and the most expansive of those who give? Or has My mercy become narrow? Indeed, those who show mercy do so only by the overflow of My mercy. Were it not that these people, O ʿĪsā b. Maryam, considered themselves by the wisdom that bequeaths in their hearts that they preferred the world over the Hereafter, they would know from where they have been afflicted, and then they would be certain that their own souls are the worst of enemies to them. How can I accept their fasting when they strengthen themselves for it with forbidden foods? How can I accept their prayer when their hearts incline to those who fight Me and deem My prohibitions lawful? How can I accept their charities when they seize people’s wealth for them and take it without right? O ʿĪsā, I only reward their due owners for them. And how can I show mercy to their weeping when their hands drip with the blood of the prophets, and I have increased in wrath upon them? O ʿĪsā, I decreed on the day I created the heavens and the earth that whoever worships Me and speaks about you both according to My word, I will make them your neighbors in the abode, your companions in the dwellings, and your partners in honor. And I decreed on the day I created the heavens and the earth that whoever takes you and your mother as two gods besides Allah, I will place them in the lowest depths of the Fire. And I decreed on the day I created the heavens and the earth that I will establish this matter by the hand of My servant Muḥammad and seal with him the prophets and messengers. His birth is in Makkah, his emigration in Ṭaybah, and his dominion in Syria. He is not harsh, nor coarse, nor clamorous in the markets, nor adorned with obscenity, nor given to foul speech. I will direct him to every beautiful matter and grant him every noble character. I will make piety his conscience, wisdom his understanding, fidelity his nature, justice his conduct, truth his law, and Islam his religion. His name is Aḥmad. Through him I guide after misguidance, teach after ignorance, enrich after poverty, and raise after lowliness. Through him I guide and open between deaf ears, covered hearts, and divergent and scattered whims. I will make his community the best community brought forth for people, enjoining good and forbidding evil, with sincerity to My name and affirmation of what the messengers brought. I will inspire them with glorification, declaration of oneness, and sanctification in their mosques, their gatherings, their homes, their comings and goings, and their resting places. They pray to Me standing, sitting, bowing, and prostrating, and they fight in My path in ranks and hosts. Their sacrifice is their blood, their gospels are in their chests, and their sacrifice is in their bellies. They are monks by night, lions by day. That is My bounty which I give to whom I will, and I am the possessor of great bounty.”
