Translation

✧ Mention of those of the notables who died in this year 1097 - Ayyūb b. al-Mutawakkil al-Muqriʾ. Of the people of al-Baṣrah. He heard ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mahdī and others. ʿAlī b. al-Madīnī and Yaḥyā narrated from him. He was one of the qurrāʾ. He died in this year. 1098 - Abān b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd b. Isḥāq b. Ghafīr, mawlā of Banū Raqqāsh. Of the people of al-Baṣrah, a gifted and foremost poet. He came to Baghdād, attached himself to the Barāmikah, and devoted himself to them. For them he composed the book "Kalīlah wa-Dimnah" in verse. He has qaṣīdahs and panegyrics on al-Rashīd and al-Faḍl b. Yaḥyā. It is said that whenever prose is turned into poetry, the prose is more eloquent than the poetry, except for this book. From Muḥammad b. Ṣāliḥ al-Hāshimī, who said: A son of ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd al-Lāḥiqī narrated to me, saying: Yaḥyā b. Khālid wished to memorize the book "Kalīlah wa-Dimnah," but it proved difficult for him. Abān b. ʿAbd al-Ḥamīd said to him: "I shall turn it into poetry so that its memorization may be light for the wazīr." So he transferred it into a qaṣīdah he composed in rhymed couplets, the number of whose verses was fourteen thousand, in three months. Yaḥyā gave him ten thousand dīnārs, and al-Faḍl gave him five thousand dīnārs. Jaʿfar b. Yaḥyā said to him: "Are you not content that I be your transmitter for it?" But he gave him nothing. He said: He gave away as alms a third of the wealth he had received. Abān was of good conduct, a memorizer of the Qurʾān, and knowledgeable in fiqh. At his death he said: "I hope in God and ask His mercy. Never has a night passed over me in which I did not pray much supererogatory prayer." The opening of this qaṣīdah of his: This is a book of adab and trial, and it is the one called Kalīlah Dimnah. 1099 - Maʿrūf b. al-Fayrūzān, Abū Maḥfūẓ, known as al-Karkhī. In reference to Karkh Baghdād. His family were Christians. As a boy in the Qurʾān school, their teacher would say: "Father and son." And he would cry out: "One! One!" He embraced Islam. He narrated from Bakr b. Ḥubaysh, al-Rabīʿ b. Ṣubayḥ, and others. He was one of the great ascetics in this world, of those who knew God and loved Him. He had karāmāt. He was mentioned once in the presence of Aḥmad, and it was said: "He has little knowledge." Aḥmad said: "Is anything sought of knowledge except what Maʿrūf attained?" Sufyān b. ʿUyaynah used to say: "The people of Baghdād will remain in good as long as Maʿrūf remains among them." From Saʿīd b. ʿUthmān, who said: I heard Muḥammad b. Manṣūr say: One day I went to Maʿrūf al-Karkhī, then returned to him the next day. I saw on his face the mark of a head wound. I was too awed to ask him about it. There was with him a man bolder toward him than I, who said to him: "We were with you last night, and with us was Muḥammad b. Manṣūr, and we did not see this mark on your face." Maʿrūf said to him: "Take up what benefits you." He said to him: "I ask you by the right of God." Maʿrūf trembled, then said to him: "What need have you of this? Last night I went to the Sacred House of God, then came to Zamzam and drank from it. My foot slipped, and the door struck my face. So this that you see is from that." From Abū Bakr b. al-Zayyāt, who said: I heard Ibn Shīrawayh say: I used to sit with Maʿrūf al-Karkhī often. One day I saw his face had emptied [of its usual expression]. I said to him: "O Abū Maḥfūẓ, it has reached me that you walk on water." He said to me: "I have never walked on water. But when I intend to cross, its two banks are gathered for me, and I step across." From Muḥammad b. Ṣubayḥ, who said: Maʿrūf passed by a water-carrier who was giving water to drink, and he was saying: "May God have mercy on whoever drinks." So he drank — though he was fasting — and said: "Perhaps God may answer his supplication." [Ibn al-Jawzī, may God have mercy on him, said:] Maʿrūf died in the year two hundred; it is also said: in the year two hundred and four. The former is more correct. I have gathered his reports in a separate book, so I have not lengthened this account here by repetition. 1100 - Wahb b. Wahb b. Kathīr b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Zamʿah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā, Abū al-Bakhtarī, al-Qurashī. He narrated from Hishām b. ʿUrwah, Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad, and Ibn Jurayj. He moved from al-Madīnah to Baghdād. Al-Rashīd appointed him judge of ʿAskar al-Mahdī, then dismissed him and appointed him over the city of the Messenger of God ﷺ, entrusting to him its prayer, its judgeship, and its military affairs. He was generous, apologizing to the one to whom he gave even if his gift was great. His panegyrist said: Would that you had done — may the King guide you — among us as Abū al-Bakhtarī did. He sought out his brethren in the lands and enriched the poor beyond the rich. Except that he used to fabricate ḥadīth and stay up at night fabricating it. From Abū Saʿīd al-ʿAqīlī, who said: When al-Rashīd came to al-Madīnah, he deemed it too great to ascend the minbar of the Prophet ﷺ wearing a black qabāʾ and a belt. Abū al-Bakhtarī said: Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad narrated to us, from his father, who said: Jibrīl descended upon the Prophet ﷺ wearing a qabāʾ and a belt, girt with a dagger. Al-Muʿāfā al-Taymī recited these verses: Woe and lamentation for Abū al-Bakhtarī when the people assemble at the gathering place, Because of his false statement and his open lie against Jaʿfar among the people. By God, you have not left an hour for fiqh, whether in the desert or in settled land, Nor did people ever see him in his lifetime passing between the grave and the minbar. May God slay Abū Wahb! He has openly proclaimed falsehood and evil. He claims that the Chosen One, Aḥmad, was visited by Jibrīl, the pious, the righteous, Wearing a khuff and a black qabāʾ, girt at the waist with a dagger. From Yaḥyā b. Maʿīn: He stopped at the circle of Abū al-Bakhtarī, and there he was narrating this ḥadīth: from Jaʿfar b. Muḥammad, from his father, from Jābir. He said to him: "You have lied, O enemy of God, against the Messenger of God ﷺ." He said: The shurṭah seized me. I said: "This man claims that the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds descended upon the Prophet ﷺ wearing a qabāʾ." He said: They said to me: "This is a lying judge," and they released me. Abū al-Bakhtarī died in Baghdād in this year.
