✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 1077 - Shuʿayb b. Ḥarb, Abū Ṣāliḥ al-Madīnī. He heard Shuʿba, al-Thawrī, and Zuhayr b. Muʿāwiya. From him narrated: Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal and others. He was among the trustworthy scholars, the devout worshippers, the commanders of good, and the meticulous in seeking what is lawful. On the authority of Aḥmad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Ṣūfī, who said: I heard Abū Ḥamdūn al-Muqriʾ, whose name is Ṭayyib b. Ismāʿīl, say: We went to al-Madāʾin to Shuʿayb b. Ḥarb. He was sitting on the bank of the Tigris, and he had built a hut, and bread was hung for him, and he was only skin and bone. He said: He said: I still see flesh here. By God, there is no knowledge in our abodes of it until I enter the grave while I am bones that rattle. Do I want fat for the worms and snakes? He said: His statement reached Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal, and he said: Shuʿayb b. Ḥarb imposed hardship on himself in scrupulousness. On the authority of Ibrāhīm b. ʿAbd al-Malik, who said: A man came to Shuʿayb b. Ḥarb while he was in Makkah and said: What brought you? He said: I came to keep you company. He said: You came to keep me company while I have been contending with solitude for forty years. Ibn Abī al-Dunyā said: Al-Ḥasan b. al-Ṣabbāḥ narrated to me, saying: I heard Shuʿayb b. Ḥarb say: Do not sit except with one of two men: a man who teaches you good and you accept from him, or a man whom you teach good and he accepts from you. As for the third, flee from him. On the authority of ʿAbd al-Wahhāb, who said: There were people here who went out to al-Madāʾin to Shuʿayb b. Ḥarb, and they did not return to their homes. Indeed, some of them stayed without drawing water, and Shuʿayb used to say to some of those who drew water: If Sufyān saw you, his eye would be delighted. The compiler, may God have mercy on him, said: Shuʿayb had withdrawn from people and resided in al-Madāʾin, devoting himself to worship. Then he went out to Makkah and died there of an ailment of the stomach in this year. It is also said in the year ninety-nine. 1078 - ʿUbayd b. Wahb b. Muslim, Abū Muḥammad, a client of Quraysh. He was born in Dhū al-Qaʿdah in the year one hundred twenty-five, and he sought knowledge when he was seventeen years old. On the authority of Aḥmad b. Saʿīd al-Hamdānī, who said: Ibn Wahb entered the bathhouse and heard a reciter reciting: "And when they dispute in the Fire" [Q 40:47], and he fell down in a swoon, and the depilatory paste was washed off him while he was unconscious. On the authority of Yūnus b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā, who said: The caliph wrote to ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb concerning the judgeship of Egypt, so he feigned madness and stayed in his house. Then Rashdīn b. Saʿd looked down on him from the roof and said: O Abū Muḥammad, will you not go out to the people and judge between them as God and His Messenger commanded? You have feigned madness and stayed in your house. He said: It is here that your intellect has reached its limit. Do you not know that judges will be gathered on the Day of Resurrection with the sultans, while the scholars will be gathered with the prophets!? ʿAbd Allāh died in Egypt in Shaʿbān of this year. 1079 - ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mushir b. ʿUmar—and it is said: ʿUmayr—Abū al-Haytham al-Kūfī. He reported from Hishām b. ʿUrwa and others. He was the judge of Jabal. On the authority of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mushir, who said: Abū Yūsuf al-Qāḍī appointed me as judge in Jabal, and it reached me that al-Rashīd was descending to al-Baṣra. So I asked the people of Jabal to praise me, and they promised me that they would do so when he descended. When he drew near to us, I asked them to attend, but they did not do so and dispersed. When they made me despair of them, I let my beard hang loose and went out to him. I stood, and he arrived with Abū Yūsuf with him in the ḥarrāqa, and I said: O Commander of the Faithful, what an excellent judge the judge of Jabal is! He has been just among us and has done and performed, and I began praising myself. Abū Yūsuf saw me and lowered his head and laughed. Al-Rashīd said to him: Why did you laugh? He said: The one praising the judge is the judge himself. Hārūn laughed until he kicked with his feet and said: This is a silly, base old man, so dismiss him. So he dismissed me. When he returned, I began going back and forth to him and asking him to appoint me as judge of another district, but he did not do so. So I narrated to the people from Mujālid, from al-Shaʿbī, that the kunya of the Dajjāl is Abū Yūsuf. That reached him, and he said: This is in return for that. That is enough for you; come to me so that I appoint you to another district. So he did so, and I desisted from him. Yaḥyā said: ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Mushir is nothing. Al-Nasāʾī said: He is matrūk al-ḥadīth (abandoned in hadith). 1080 - ʿUthmān b. Saʿīd, Abū Saʿīd, nicknamed Warsh. He transmitted the recitation from Nāfiʿ, and he is one of the leading figures among his companions. He died in this year. 1081 - Wakīʿ b. al-Jarrāḥ b. ʿUday b. Faras b. Jamḥah, Abū Sufyān al-Ruʾāsī al-Kūfī. He was born in the year one hundred twenty-nine, and it is said in the year twenty-eight. He heard Ismāʿīl b. Abī Khālid, Hishām b. ʿUrwa, al-Aʿmash, Ibn ʿAwn, Ibn Jurayj, al-Awzāʿī, Sufyān, and many others. He transmitted hadith when he was thirty-three years old. From him narrated Ibn al-Mubārak, Qutayba, Aḥmad, and Yaḥyā. Al-Rashīd summoned him to appoint him as judge, but he refused. On the authority of Wakīʿ, who said: I came to al-Aʿmash and said: Narrate to me. He said to me: What is your name? I said: Wakīʿ. He said: A noble name, and I think you will have a notable affair. Where do you live in al-Kūfa? I said: Among Banū Ruʾās. He said: Where in relation to the house of al-Jarrāḥ b. Malīḥ? I said: That is my father, and my father was in charge of the treasury. He said: Go and bring me my stipend, and come back so that I narrate to you five hadiths. He said: I went to my father and told him, and he said: Take half of the stipend and go with it. When he narrates the five to you, take the other half and go with it, so that they become ten. He said: I brought him half of his stipend, and he took it and placed it in his palm, then fell silent. I said: Narrate to me. He said: Write. And he dictated to me two hadiths. He said: I said: You promised me five. He said: Where are all the dirhams? I think your father commanded you to do this, and he did not know that al-Aʿmash has witnessed battles. Go and bring all of it in full, and come back and I will narrate to you five hadiths. He said: I brought it to him, and he narrated to me five. He said: Every month I would bring him his stipend, and he would narrate to me five hadiths. On the authority of Asad b. ʿAfīr, who said: A man from the people of this field, from the people of refinement and literature, narrated to me, saying: A man came to Wakīʿ and said to him: I appeal to you by a claim of respect. He said: And what is your claim? He said: You used to write from my inkwell in the assembly of al-Aʿmash. He said: Wakīʿ jumped up and brought out from his house a purse containing dinars and said: Excuse me, for I own nothing other than it. On the authority of Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī, who said: I heard Aḥmad b. Ḥanbal mention Wakīʿ one day and say: My eyes have never seen the like of him. He memorizes hadith well, and he discusses jurisprudence excellently, along with scrupulousness and diligence, and he does not speak against anyone. On the authority of Ismāʿīl b. Abī Khālid, from ʿAbd Allāh, that when the Messenger of God ﷺ died, he was not buried until his belly swelled and his little fingers spread apart. Qutayba said: Wakīʿ narrated this hadith while he was in Makkah, and it was the year in which al-Rashīd performed the pilgrimage. They brought him before him, and al-Rashīd summoned Sufyān b. ʿUyayna and ʿAbd al-Majīd b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Abī Rawwād. As for ʿAbd al-Majīd, he said: This man must be killed, for he did not narrate this except with rancor in his heart toward the Prophet ﷺ. Al-Rashīd asked Sufyān b. ʿUyayna, and he said: Killing is not obligatory upon him. A man heard a hadith and narrated it; killing is not obligatory upon him. Al-Madīna is intensely hot. The Prophet ﷺ died on Monday, and he was lowered into his grave on Wednesday night because the people were occupied with the welfare of the community of Muḥammad ﷺ, and Quraysh and the Anṣār differed, so because of that he changed. Qutayba said: When the action of ʿAbd al-Majīd was mentioned to Wakīʿ, he would say: That is an ignorant man. He heard a hadith and did not recognize its meaning, so he spoke as he spoke. Wakīʿ died at Fayd in this year, and he was sixty-six years old.
