✧ Ashʿath al-Ḥuddānī: He said: Ḥazm said: Ashʿath al-Ḥuddānī said to us: "Go to Ḥabīb Abū Muḥammad and greet him." He said: "And that was at the rising of the day." So we went with him and greeted him. Ḥabīb came out, and they began to weep; they did not cease weeping until noon arrived. Then we prayed, and again they began to weep; they did not cease weeping until the afternoon arrived. He said: Then we prayed the afternoon prayer, and they did not cease weeping until sunset arrived. Then we brought his donkey close, and he mounted, and he said to us: "There are people who forbid this; shall I obey them?" We said: "You know best." He said: "Then, by God, I will not obey them." Jaʿfar al-Akbar, son of al-Manṣūr: He held the governorship of al-Mawṣil and died during his father's lifetime. Ḥumayd b. Jābir al-Shāmī, the amir: Ibrāhīm b. Yasār said: One day I was walking with Ibrāhīm b. Adham in a desert when we came upon a raised grave. He fell silent over it and wept, so I said: "Who is this?" He said: "The grave of Ḥumayd b. Jābir, the amir of all these cities. He was drowning in the sea of this world, and God brought him out of it and rescued him. It has reached me that one day he took delight in something of the pastimes of his kingship, his worldly life, and its delusion, then slept in that assembly of his with his close family. He saw a man standing at his head with a book in his hand; he handed it to him, and he opened it and read it, and in it was written in gold: 'Do not prefer the perishable over the enduring, and do not be deceived by your kingship, your authority, your slaves, and your pleasures; for what you are in is weighty only because it lacks permanence; it is a kingdom only because after it comes destruction; it is joy and delight only because it is diversion and delusion; and it is a day only if tomorrow could be trusted in it. So hasten to the command of God, Mighty and Majestic, for God has said: And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the righteous [Q 3:133].' So he awoke in alarm and said: 'This is a warning from God, Mighty and Majestic, and an admonition.' Then he left his kingship without anyone knowing, and he headed for this mountain and devoted himself to worship there. When his story reached me and I was told of his affair, I sought him out and asked him, and he told me of the beginning of his affair. I continued to seek him until he died and was buried here. So this is his grave." Ḥassān b. Abī Sinān: He narrated from al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī, Anas, and Thābit. A shaykh called Abū Ḥakīm said: Ḥassān b. Abī Sinān went out on the day of the festival, and when he returned, his wife said to him: "How many beautiful women did you see today?" When she persisted, he said: "Woe to you! I looked at nothing but my thumb from the time I left you until I returned to you." ʿAbd Allāh said: A slave of Ḥassān b. Abī Sinān wrote to him from al-Ahwāz: "The sugar cane has been struck by blight, so buy sugar in your area." So he bought from a man, and only a little time passed before there was a profit of thirty thousand in what he had purchased. He said: Then he went to the owner of the sugar and said: "O you! My slave wrote to me, and I did not inform you, so release me from what I bought from you." The other said: "You have informed me now, and I make it good for you." So he returned, but his heart could not bear it, and he went back to him and said: "O you! I did not approach the matter from its proper way, and I would like you to take back this sale." He did not cease until he returned it to him. ʿĀṣim b. Farqad said: We entered upon Ḥassān b. Abī Sinān when death had come to him, and one of his brothers said to him: "How do you find yourself?" He said: "I find myself in the state of death." He said: "Do you find, O Abū ʿAbd Allāh, severe distress?" He said: Then he wept and said: "[Indeed that; then he said: Indeed that; then he said:] It behooves the believer to be diverted from the distress of death and its pain because of the joy he hopes for in meeting God, [Mighty and Majestic]." ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAwn b. Arṭabān, known as Abū ʿAwn, client of ʿAbd Allāh b. Durra al-Muzanī: He was trustworthy and pious. Bakkār said: I never saw Ibn ʿAwn jest with anyone, argue with anyone, [or recite poetry], and he was occupied with himself. When he prayed the dawn prayer, he would remain facing the qiblah in his seat remembering God; when the sun rose upon him, he would pray, then turn to his companions. I never saw him revile anyone at all — not a slave, a slave woman, a chicken, or a sheep. I never saw anyone more in control of his tongue than him. He fasted one day and broke his fast the next until he died. I never saw a dinar or dirham in his hand, and I never saw him weigh anything. When he performed ablution, no one helped him, and he would wipe his face with a towel or a cloth after ablution. He had a pleasant scent and soft clothing. When he was alone in his house, he was silent and did not add anything beyond "Praise be to God, our Lord." I never saw him enter a bathhouse. When he bestowed something upon a person, he gave it secretly; if he did something, he did it secretly, disliking that anyone should see it. He had a portion of the Qurʾān that he recited every night; if he did not recite it at night, he completed it during the day. He trimmed his mustache, taking a middle course. In his illness, he was the most patient person I ever saw; I never saw him complain of anything in his illness until he died in Rajab of this year. Ḥammād b. Zayd narrated from Ibn ʿAwn: He said: He had shops that he rented out, and he did not rent them to Muslims. He was asked about that, and he said: "For such a person, when the beginning of the month comes, there is dread, and I dislike to cause dread to a Muslim." ʿUthmān b. ʿAṭāʾ al-Khurāsānī: He narrated from ʿAbd Allāh b. Wahb; he lived in Filasṭīn and died in this year. [Deaths] In this year died Usayd b. ʿAbd Allāh in Dhū al-Ḥijjah, and he was the governor of Khurāsān. And Ḥanẓala b. Abī Sufyān al-Jumaḥī. And ʿAlī b. Ṣāliḥ b. Ḥubayy, the brother of al-Ḥasan b. Ṣāliḥ; they were both pious, and there was in them some Shīʿī leaning.
