Translation

✧ Those of the notables who died in the year one hundred and nineteen: Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit al-Asadī, a client of Banū Kāhil: He narrated from ʿUmar, Ibn ʿAbbās [and Jābir, Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām, and Anas b. Mālik] and Ibn Abī Awfā. He was greatly devoted to worship. Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh said: If you saw Ḥabīb b. Abī Thābit prostrating, you would say: He is dead from the length of his prostration. He was generous, spending one hundred thousand on the Qurʾān reciters. He used to say: I have never borrowed anything from anyone more beloved to me than my own self; I say to it: Wait until what you love comes. [And he died in this year.] Ḥabīb, Abū Muḥammad al-Fārisī: He attended the gathering of al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī and was affected by his admonition, so he gave up what he possessed and devoted himself to worship. He had a wife called ʿAmrah who would wake him in the pre-dawn and say: Rise, O man, for the night has gone and the day has come, and before you is a long road, and the provision is little, and the caravans of the righteous have moved on ahead of us, and we remain behind. From Khalaf b. al-Walīd, who said: Ḥabīb al-Fārisī bought himself from his Lord four times for forty thousand dirhams. He brought out a purse and said: O Lord, I have bought myself from You with this. He brought out another purse and said: My God, if You accepted that one, then this is its thanks. Then he brought out the third and said: My God, if You did not accept the first and the second, then accept this one. Then he brought out the fourth and said: My God, if You accepted the third, then this is thanks for it. Abū Bakr b. Abī al-Dunyā said with a chain of transmission from Ismāʿīl b. Zakariyyā, who was a neighbor of Ḥabīb: When evening came I would hear his weeping, and when morning came I would hear his weeping. So I came to his family and said: What is the matter with him that he weeps in the evening and weeps in the morning? She said to me: By God, he fears in the evening that he will not reach the morning, and in the morning that he will not reach the evening. From ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. Zayd: Ḥabīb Abū Muḥammad was intensely distressed at death. He began to say in Persian: I want to travel a journey I have never traveled before; I want to take a path I have never taken before; I want to enter beneath the dust and remain beneath it until the Day of Resurrection, then I will be made to stand before God, and I fear that He will say to me: Ḥabīb, bring a single glorification you glorified Me with in sixty years in which Satan did not get hold of you. What shall I say when I have no stratagem? I say: O Lord, here I have come to You with empty hands up to my neck. ʿAbd al-Wāḥid said: This is a servant of God, sixty years occupied with Him and never occupied with anything of this world at all. What then is our state? Help us, O God! Mujammiʿ b. Samʿān, Abū Ḥamzah: Sufyān al-Thawrī regarded him with great esteem, to the point that he said: There is nothing in my deeds that I hope is untainted by anything like my love for Mujammiʿ al-Taymī. Sufyān said: It is reported from Abū Ḥayyān al-Taymī that he said and swore: Nothing of his deeds is more firmly established in his own soul than his love for Mujammiʿ al-Taymī. Abū Bakr b. ʿAyyāsh used to say: And who was more pious than Mujammiʿ? Mujammiʿ saw a tear in Sufyān’s waist-wrapper and gave him four thousand dirhams. Sufyān said: I do not need them. He said: You are right; you do not need them, but I need them. From Sufyān, who said: Misʿar said: Mujammiʿ came to the market with a ewe to sell it, and he said: It seems to me that there is saltiness in its milk. Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī said: Mujammiʿ supplicated his Lord, mighty and majestic, to cause him to die before the tribulation, and he died that very night, and Zayd b. ʿAlī came out the next day. And in it died ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Saʿīd b. Yarbūʿ al-Makhzūmī, Qays b. Saʿd al-Makkī, and Sulaymān b. Mūsā al-Ashdaq.
